CRIPPLE FOR LIFE YET HE IS HAPPY FOR FORTUNE HAS AT LAST SMILED ON ONE SHE HAD CRUELLY LAUGHED TO SCORN. 1O0W LUCK HAS TURNED FOR A COLORADO MAN Falls Heir to $35,000 After Life Has Ap parently Lost All Its Charm-Solves a Puzzle in a Prize Paper and Secures Enough Money to Start a Fight for a Fortune That Is His. [oY ASSOLIATED PRESS.] Pueblo, Colo., Oct. 2a.-Helpless, inert and a cripple for life, lying in the Pueblo hospital, is M. L. Blackburn, a charge upon the county of Pueblo. There is noth ing strange about this, but when it is known that this man stands a chance of springing from poverty to an inheritance of $35,ooo, the story assumes a romantic tinge, although true, and at once becomes interesting. During the civil war Phinecas James, a lifelong friend of Blackburn's parents, died, leaving a will in which they were named as beneficiaries. The estate con sisted of a $7,ooo mortgage upon a farm in Horton county, Texas. Dee Breman was appointed executor of the James estate, and foreclosed the mortgage and collected $7,600, for which he never made any accounting. Her Claim Was Worthless. Blackburn's father died, and some years later Mrs. Blackburn took up the matter of her claim in the James estate and at tempted to get the money from Breman, who had died in the meantime, but she was told that his estate was of no value and that her claim was worthless. The estate of James was settled in 1872, and the executor made reference to the money which he failed to account for. Black born learned of his claim after the death of his mother, but did riot attempt to do anything until recently. While lying si the hospital his mind went back to the old claim and he concluded to make an endeavor to get it. He accordingly con sulted S. H. White, a Pueblo attorney, who was convinced that the man really had a good case. He applied to the board of county com missioners to pay his expenses on a trip to Texas to investigate, but they refused. Dame Fortune Smiled on Him. Blackburn was discouraged, but fortune smiled upon him, for while reading a Maine paper he ran across an offer of cash prizes for a guessing contest. He went to work and carefully solved the puzzle, and as a reward the publication sent him a check for $383, thus enabling him to make the trip with Mr. White to Texas. As a result of his investigation it was found that the estate of Breman, execu tor of the James estate, was worth $500, ooo, and it was decided to file a regular claim against it for the $7,000 and In terest, now amounting to about $35,000. He thought something of trying to get hold of the land, but when he found that the money had been collected under the mortgage sale by Breman and never ac counted for to the James estate, Mr. White decided that his case lay with the heirs of the old executor. lie is now awaiting the result of the filing of the claim, having secured the aid of some lawyers in Texas to look after Black burn's interests down there. The cripple is in the hospital here and awaits the re sult of the claim with considerable in terest. WANDER ABOUT WITHOUT THE WHERE TO RECLINE Cree Indians Bury Their Dead Wherever They Fall and the Smallpox Is Still Raging Fiercely. r.s'r.t'.\I. TO INTER MOUrA.uNS.] Great Falls, Oct. 22.-When it was re ported recently that smallpox had broken out among the Indians of the Blackfoot reservation steps were taken to preve)t the spread of the dread disease but owing to the lateness of the report little could be accomplished in the way of quarantine and as a result a pitiful condition now pre vails. Dr. A. F. Ioongeway, secretary of the ,tate board of health, now has the mat ter in hand and will endeavor to check the progress of the epidemic. It is reported that the Crees have de veloped a virulent form of smallpox and when they were driven away fromn the Blackfoot reservation they wandered about aimlessly, burying their dead along the way. In Havre the disease has spread at an alarming rate and more than 20 cases have developed among the Crees. A rigid quarantine is to he maintained. until the malady is well in hand by the authorities.
