DIRECTORS DULY GRATEFUL Thought Komer Will Be Promoted for His Brave and Prompt Action When Summoned by Highwaymen. When Fred A. Korner, the Pacific Ex press company messenger, who was on the Oregon Railroad & Navigation train that robbers tried to hold up at Corbett, Ore., September aj, fired at the robbers and winged one of them, he not only put an end to the daring attempt to rob the train, lbut incidentally he made a name for himself and won a prize of $1,ooo. For his bravery upon that occasion F. C. Gentsch of St. l.ouls, the general su perintendent of the Pacific Express com pany, has sent him a draft for $1,ooo and a letter praising him. lThe company will probably see to it that he is promoted in due time. W. II. Lovesy of Pncntello, Idaho, the route agent for the Pacific Express com pany, who is here today on business, has in his possession a copy of the letter General Superintendent (;entsch sent to Korner inclosing a draft for $i .oo and praising him for his act. The letter is dated St. I.ouis, October 3, and is as fol lows: "l)ear Sir-Sulperintcndcnt Rodgers has sent ime your report of the attempt to rob your car on O. R. & N. train, No. 6, Sep temiher 23. near Corbett. Ore., at about to p. Im., on which occasion you so fear lessly and successfully defenlded the coim pany's property placed in yotr charge, thereby not only preventing the execution of the robbers' plans, but so seriously wounded onle of themn that he was cap tured, "As sublstantial evidence of the manage ment's appreciation of your action, I hand you herewith a draft for $S,ooo and beg to further advise you that at the next meeting of the board of directors attention will be called to the case and an appro priate resolution of thafks offered, to be engrossed and prersented to you. "Again thanking you for your splendid bravery and devotion to duty and with kindest wishes for your future welfare, I am, yours very truly, "F. C. GENTSCH." Korner sent to the company a very com plete report of the affair. He said he had sonime express matter to leave at Corbett and he signaled the enginer to stop. In stead he wvas surprised when the engineer ran by. Pretty soon the train came to a stop and heheeard the engineer's voice outside the express car. lie was calling to the agent to come out. This he declined to do and pretty soon the robbers placed some dyna mite upon the doorsill and exploded it. Even this did not rattle the brave mes senger. lie grabbed his shotgun and, looking out, shot at some men. The engi neer yelled that he had been hit. One of the robbers also fell and the others took to their heels. Korner fired again at them as they were going over the hill and thinks he winged one of them. "Korner is a small malan, but all nerve and grit," said Mr. Lovcsy. "lie always said that if train robbers ever tried to hold hinm up there would bIe socthling doing. I think his brave action, while it is to be regretted that the engineer who was used as a shield was shot, will serve Inotice upon robbers to let the Pacific Express comlpany alone." CHINESE MINISTER ON THE SITUATION EMPIRE IS 'POWERLESS TO FORCE RUSSIA TO KEEP AGREEMENT AND GET OUT NOW. CANNOT DEFEND MANCHURIA Sir Lian Chenge Tung Confers About Crisis With Secretary Hay Russia May Keep Province. DY ASSOCIATEID PRerS. Washington, Oct. 9.-Sir Lian Chenge Tung, the Chinese minister, had a long conference with Secretary Hay today re gardinmg the situation in Manchuria. The minister received information some time ago that there was no apparent move on the part of Russia indicating that the country would begin the evacuation of Manchuria on October 8, as stipulated in a treaty made with China. The Chinese minister naturaily feels keenly the conditions that exist, as it is everywhere known that China is in no position to enforce the treaty and compel Russia to evacuate. At present the concern of the United States is to see that the agreements made with China for the open ports in Man churia are carried out, regardless of what Russia may do either in evacuation or per manent control of the province. A Fishy Brawl. The gentle expressman hurled himself into the room and flung the package far from him, "Charges 35 cents, C. O. D.," he 'bawled out. Agents for lawe's 8lats for Men MRS, TOM NOYES ON ALASKAN WILDS BUTTE WOMAN TALKS ENTERTAIN INGLY OF HER TRIP TO THE FROZEN NORTH. EXPECTS TO GO BACK THERE Little Indian Maid She Has Brought Is Not a Princess, but Just a Plain Islaiden. WVhen ae speaks of life within the Arctic circle it is natural to think of Eskimos, seals and whales. Is it to be wondered at that one i' surprised on being confronted with a charming and refined young woman who says, "I live on the Katbebue Sound, 5oo miles north of Nome, in Alaska?" These were the words of Mrs. Tom Noyes as she talked with an Inter Moun tain representative today. Mrs. Noyes has just arrived in the city from Northern Alaska with her husband and little child, accompanied by an Eskimo maid. "Our home is in Candle City and lies on the Candle river about eight miles in land from'the ocean. Yes, there are q lto a number of white people in that couhnry and it never seems lonesome. "My nurse maid is an Eskimo girl mho has been with us during the last three years and she is very efficient. These Indians make good servants when properly trained, as they seem to take quickly Ito the ways of those with whom they live. I like them as a people, but I realize that as a race the Eskimos are rapidly becom ing extinct. "The women would scarcely do as Pa risian models, as they are very large and square and have no figure whatever, and marry at the age of 13 to 14 years. 'lte most they live on is fish with a few sile dishes of seal and a few wild geese nsrepd as a luxury. "The implements used by these peole are made of jade and have such a polish as would delight the heart of an artist. The present generation knows nothing of when these implements were made and no one of the many tribes in the country can smake them. They must have come down through many hundreds of years and are considered as heirlooms by the tribes. "Yes, we shall return to the north in the spring, as Mr. Noyes has a great deal of property there, I do not dislike living in Alaska, for I am always glad to be with my husband and child. I will miss, no doubt, the long nights and wonderful sun effects, but there are many things of interest here, too. "No, the maid is not an Eskimo prin cess; just an ordinary little Indian girl, who is quite civilized and I hope will some day forget that she belonged to the wilds of Alaska." Berlin, Oct. 9.-The trial at Beyreuth of Andreas Dippold, a tutor, who tied Heinz Koch, a x4-year-old son of Director Koch of the Deutsche bank to a bed and whipped him to death, ended today. Dip pold was sentenced to 8 years' imprison ment. While the dead boy's younger brother, Joachim, testified to unnameable tortures inflicted on himself and his brother, the persons in court were aroused to such a pitch of fury that they threatened the prisoner, who was hastily removed by the officials. Joachim avowed and the medical ex pccts agreed t*l Dippold was more de based than the London fiend who had been termed "Jack the Ripper," One or the Other.
