IN THE STREET TODAY BY ASSOCIATED PRESS. New York, Oct. ao.-London prices fore shadowed the opening advance in the stock market here, which was based on the hope that the'threatened further troubles at Balti surre and Pittsburg had been averted. Pennsylvania yielded a shade and United States Steel preferred (ex-dividend) ran off T?. Otherwise gains were the rule, and in the prominent railroad stocks they reached liberal fractions. Prices were bid up strongly when the room traders attempted to cover and be. fore ar o'clock most of the recognized leaders wete selling in the neighborhood of a point abbve yesterday's close. NEW UNION DEPOT TO BE DISCUSSED BUSINESS MEN'S ASSOCIATION S1 TO FORMALLY TAIKE UP THE PROPOSITION. CITY NEEDS NEW STATION Thought That Railways Can Now Be In duced to Take Some Favorable Action on the Matter. The question of a new railroad depot for Butte is again the principal topic for discussion at the meetings of the Busi ness Men's association. The story printed in the Inter Mountain two weeks ago, announcing the purpose of the railroad companies to build a big union depot, has re-opened the issue. The business men appointed a committee last night consist Ing of Dr. Murray, E. H. Renisch and Judge Speer to keep the question before the people. The committee will call a meeting soon, when a plan will be devised by which the matter can be placed before the railroad magnates again and in its proper light. City Needa New Depot. There is no question but that Butte needs a new depot. Year after year promises have been held out by the rail road companies that new buildings would be erected, but there was always some hitch. Now it has become known that a union depot Is planned and the business men are anxious to have the enterprise hurried along to completion. The buildings now used for depots in Butte are wholly unfit for the purpose. Butte furnishes more business to the rail road than any other city in the state and is entitled to have better facilities at the passenger stations. Helena and Living ston are notable examples of the smaller towns with splendid depots. Scheme Impractleable. When the matter was brought to the attcntion of President .Mellen and Presi dent Hill, a long time ago, it was stated that a union depot was impracticable, be cause no common ground could be ob tained, Then it was announced that the Northern Pacific proposed erecting a new depot of its own, but a hitch occurred over Ones. OUSIY RAlZO AND CARTRIDGE FOUND MINERS OF DIXON PICK UP WHAT MAY SOLVE MYSTERY OF GRINNING SKULL EXPECT TO COME ON BONES May Be That Murder Was Not Done, but That Remains Are Probably Those of Luokless Prowler. IAnother find was made today In the old Dixon mine northwest of Walkerville, where a skull was found on a wall plate a short time ago. The workmen employed in the mine picked up an old rusty razor and a 38-caliber cartridge. That these ar ticles are directly connected with the mys tery of the skull there can be little doubt. The officers are confident that when the bottom of the shaft is reached the re mainder of the skeleton will be found and evidences of murder will be brought to light. There are yet eight feet of water in the mine to be pumped out. This will be accomplished some time tomorrow unless some unforseen difficulty is encountered. At the bottom of the lso-foot shaft there is doubtless the bones of a person who met a violent death years ago. May Find Pistol. The finding of the revolver cartridge leads to the supposition that the gun is' there also. The razor, too, may have played an important part in the old tragedy. More light will be thrown on the mystery tomorrow. The shaft has been filled with water so long that it is hard to tell within a few years when the unfortunate person met death in the shaft. The razor is badly nicked and the edge has been eaten away by the corrosion of chemicals in the water. Thq blade appears to have been rusting a lo time, sn,t. finding of the grinning skull setn, .pA,ýrp wall plate in the shaft, all s of theories have been advanced to expTsin i'tpresence.
