President Craven, who came to Um S chool of Mines in 1904 u p r e tea sor of mathematics and mechanics, was elevated to hi* p r ese n t pm , Uu in 1981 when former President C. H Oapp left to assume the of Montau State University at Mis soula. Us appointment beta« Hr a three year term. At that Umc the comprehensive building program for the various in stitutions of the Univanity of Mon h* tana mad# possible by lb« bond ianme of 1920 was Jut getting started and the new heed of Montau Mines was faced by a heavy burden of extra work far in excess of that ordmarth to be mat. That he was the right man for this work is shown by Um vastly improved physical plut ndw at Um disposal of Montau young gineers, metallurgists, or mining go ologista. During hk administration thus far President Craven, aided by much previous experience in planning and building hydro-electric plante, has completed and equipped a new »280, 000 chemistry and metallurgy build ing, the finest structure tor tto pur poem west of the Mississippi river. and a new $60,000 engineering kail he OW Main hall and toe Mill bulkteg.fuy making them up to date in every rooms, and installing flu equipment tor teaching assaying and ere drees ing. Minor improvements, too nnm erous to mention, have Pi m e n t he is supervising the erection on the campus of a now 1126,000 gym nasium which will provide amply for physical training and indoor athletics. The work of grading the campus which heretofore has almost which heretofore has been almost to tally neglected and of improving it« appearance, is also und« way. Next year the students at the School of Minos will enjoy the' least crowded classrooms and laboratories in any of Uw institutions comprising the Uni versity of Montana. President Craven bas also stabilised the courses of study offered at his college and has maintained a strong faculty. With the building program completed, he is now turning his attention towards using the in creased facilities to the best advan tage. If conditions in Montana war rant it, the next few yean will prob ably see a widened curriculum and notable additions to tbe faculty under his direction. Aside from his duties as president of the School of Mines, Dr. Craven during th« past tkra* yaars has been acting as consulting engine« for the state of Montana. In this capacity he has effected many important changes in Uw heat, water, and light ing systems at tfas state penitentiary at De« Lodge, the state insane asylum at Warm Spring*, the old soldier*' horns at Columbia Falla, the «täte reform school at Miles City, the state orphans' the state school for the blind and at Twin Bridges, deaf and dumb at Boulder, the state tubs reu i nsk hospital at Galen, and tbs state normal college at DU km. be baa authorized bav* added yvmtiy to tbs eoariort* of Ik* tbe buildings at them various tastitu Iks saving sf maney. mpseially in tbe Ckuvsa k active in civic the state.
