He had no sympathy with one idea of being taxed for highways'apparently for the sole convenience of the city man with his gasoline contraption tearing through the country. He couIdnH visualize his frenzied horses ever getting ased tothe smefl of ««so»«« and he couldn't by any stretch of the imagination figure out the possibility of making use of motorized j power in his own business. ; t was foreign to all farm traditions, and an invention of the devil to harass his pocketbook, and mak.* , . . . nnM th _ rooHs a terror dnv g î*> His wails were futile, for progress would not be stayed, unac '•ountably his livestock began to look upon the automobile with equinamity, and then his prospsrous neighbor purchases a car, the flivver appeared upon the horizon. and the lamer began to take account of time as a factor in his business. In this gradually changing point of view, the question of good roads received more and more consideration by the farmer until today he is the most insistent of all in demanding modern highways, and he is getting them ton He acknowledges the clarity of vision of those pioneers them, too. nt a -*no » y . , • in the development of good roads whom he used to decry, and is ready to back any reasonable movement in that direction._That In this conqection, locally at least, one name stands out prom inently as a sincere and conscientious worker in the good roads movement in Montana. Our conclusions -«re too often ill reactions to the effects of progress, and we eight of the results of certain policies which may etbook with a disagreeable detonation, drowning colored by p are prone to hit our own . out any possible benefit to the public in general. Tune and prog ress have a habit of working a wonderful change in our outlook upon public expenditure, and while it is customary to throw a vic ious brickbat in the direction of the men of vision while they are in the act of putting their ideas over, quite often we go out and gather in the debris on a later day and join in the loud acclamation to the man of genius. Yea, we are apt to assert we were with him now and foresighledness of Mr. Leavitt, has given an impetus to the movement that will carry it forward with increasing momentum until every farm will have an outlet by the means of a modern hard-surfaced highway. It will take time and it wiil take money— but it will be worth the price.
