BELT VALLEY TIMES S. A. Rcminfton, Editor $2 m Veer ia Advance Aaeric.» fr« Am'«., Foreig tdvertinnt RepraMnUlivc Km, red ia the PomScc «I Belt, Mom.. M .Second Cl,«» Mcil PUBLISHED EACH THURSDAY AT BELT, MONT., BY S. A. REMINGTON A PROPHECY Dairying will eventually become the chief business of Eastern Cascade County farmers. Creamerys and cheese factories will be here to prepare the product for the market. Wheat farming will be a side issue as well as beef cattle. Why ? Because of the fact that the topography of the land with its hillsides and valleys, its fertile alluvial bottoms, its bench lands where alfalfa grows luxuriantly, its shelters of pines, and cotton-wood* alders, and ideal environment for that great p$*iucer, the cherry make an was installed by men with this vision, why it closed, and how foH five years it has been in operation. A creamery is an institution »tat should be fostered in this community. It »tauld have the united support of the business tuen und further. Not. that ,t ever handle all the cream in this section but with the idea that a prosperous creamery turning out a staple product, is an asset not to be despised. TO be successful in the dairy business a man must have good milk stock and not range cows, To attempt success with the old range cow would be like go ilifr back to the old scythe to cut your hay. We can remember the day when a baby visitor at the ranch caused consternation. There were a hundred COWS but the milk we used came in the cans. When the mother asked for real milk ... . . .. ._. , . for the baby we saddled a COW pony, got a tie rope and went into the hills where a likely looking cow WHS roped, hog-tied and milked We got a pint. Two hours later the baby wanted more milk and the operation was repeated until at sight of US the cows would hunt for the most secluded spots in the breaks of Belt creek. This years ago taught the difference between range cows and milk d dWA.-—__ There is no money in feeding a cow that gives one per cent cream in her milk. When the percentage is from two and a halt j to five per cent she is payig her board if she gives a reasonable amount of milk. _/_ If possible, cows should be tested before buying and the agti cultural department at the high achool will be glad to be of service. Now that the Great Northern an other agencies are interesting themselves in the matter, it might be well for the business men of Belt to see if they can not be of assistance in helping some or our farmer, to solve the problem of how to make ranching pay. l/owistown—Pleasant Grove Snow flake, Holstein cow, produces 23,31u pounds milk and 613.02 pounds but terfat for a world's class record. ! dairy oow. Milking machines, such as seen in operation in the Jude Hubber barn will take away a large part of the drudgery of milking, while the weekly pay check will provide a steady income and an occas ional field of wheat will be used as a speculation.
