istoo much. It li not the manual labor^but being in the vicinity of tbe furnace we^complain of, and hope that In the near fu^^ture the company will be able to make^eight hours a day's work.
Theamelter grounds are tilled with ore,^the shut down for s few dsys having accu^uiulaned a great deal. In one day last^Wffk s^ venteeri cars were re*-rived. I be^Helena company says It waa a mistake |aj^announcing the smelter was short of Iron^ore for S using- There Is an abundant sup^ply of ore on hand and a very large visible^supply. From the Kadersburg Iron mines,^which have re^ ently baa* stimulated Into^increased production, 'JUb Ions are shipped^dally.
HelenaIs destined to be tbe ore mar^ket for tbe entire northwest and particu^larly for points west of here, The great^silver lead mines of Idaho are appreciating^this fact, and the result la that nearly the^entire yield of concentrates is being shipptil^to thla point. Thus a double freight is^saved, aa by having the ores treated at Hel^ens tin^ y are on the direct route to the east^^ern markets, whereas if shipped to i in niters^further west than the mines, an additional^haul would be required to transport the^bullion to the east.
NineI ting Is undou bled I v the cheapest^method of reducing ores, particularly^those which are base. Msny miners have^leads which they Imagine contain only^milling ore, hut If they should try the^smelters they would soon realize their or^ror and also find their returns larger, as^the percentage of the precious metals lost^through smelting Is less than In any other^method of ore redurtion.
ThereIs MM for another smelter here^doubly as Isrge as that at hast Helena, It Is^claimed.

JohnK. Marks, of Townseud, arrived In^the city yesterday and said the new placer^diggings discovered, while not very rich,^contains good quantities of fine gold.^Msny claims have been staked off, hut the^ground will not be worked to advantage^until water Is procured. There Is no water^for sluicing within several milea up to John^Murray's ditch from Heaver creek The^locators of the new ground are talking of^organizing a company to build a ditch. At^present the only method of mining the dirt^is to fill a bag, carry it to Townnend, about^a mile distant, and pan It out. (iood wages^arc being realized in this manner. Mr.^Msrks says the little excitement occasioned^by the discovery has subsided.
