o r eful Coecttd t Gems Gathere by Kinz,; the , Oroat Expert. Zibrge Opal in Which the 'uman Face Is Mirrored. A" isplav That Ye aacggestie of tse Wealth of rsome Prince of the Orleat,' ;:aMr, Kuns, Tiffany & Co.'s expert on Iams, has arranged the collection which he gathered during his tour of Europe and Asia last summer. and the admirersbf rare iand cOrious jewels have been invited to in paect it.. If n ordinary burglar were to twe at this colleootlon some time he would think probably that he had struck a lot of kims beside which the crown jewels of the riohest monarch in Christendom were in signifidant. Of coarse that is not so but the enormous sizes of some of the jewels as ithearre displayed to advantage are. sug gestive of the wealth of Indian princea. The topazes, amethysts and opals are large and brilliant. Mr. Kuna gathered many hotable specimens in European and Asiatio IRussia, and throughout the Ural moun .aine. He secured tiob finest opals obtaina "ble in Mexico, including one large piece of brilliant colors, said to be the largest dis covered since 1880. A curious jewel is a large, transparent opal, nearly one inch in length and three • quarters of an inch in width, which has en graved on it in high relief a figure of the the sun-a human face mirrored by blazing 'ays. The colors most vivid in the re g-ections are green and yellow, but viewed from some directions they are bluish, and reom others blazes of deep red. The opal is mounted in gold, and it is believed that it was a representative idol of some temple dedicated to the sun. The peculiar feature of it is that the mounting appears to be Persian, while the opal is, as experts believe, Mexican, The base is gold, bordered with black enamel. Above that are twenty-seven ~iternately undulating and straight-pointed 1gold rays. At the back it is fixed in an oval enameled gold box. It is accompanied by an old engraving, representing it in its temple with an attendant priest or king. It was formerly the, property of an English man. Every shade of opal and topnsaz is sh own in Mr. Kunz's collection, and there are some fine pieces of amber and odd varie ties of pearls. While abroad Mr. Kuns visited all the cutting centres of Europe and Asia where atones are mined, and ex amined a large number of the collections in museums and private residences. Ite says he has a finer colleotion of seme, precious and semi-precious stoner, art objects in stone, jade, and crystal, than has ever been brought together in this country before. Many of the curious pieces were intended for the collection of .the late E. C. Moose, which had been presented to the Metropoli tan Museum of Art. From the Ural mouun tains Mr. Kunz brought a collection of Alexandritee, topazes of blue, green and 'sherry colors; demantoids or green garnets, royal purple amethysets, changing color by artificial light, and considered the finest and largest seen in nlodern times; gold washings, sapphires, pale, yellow and blue rubies; beryls of golden yellow and green, and lapidary work peculiar to the Urals in rook crystal, garnet, amethyst, topaz, said, jade, and rhodonite. The lapidary work is marvelous, some of the reoresentations of bunuhes of fruit be ing the work of the most skillful hands. Some of the specimens required the labor of many months. Most of thoem were mads in the interior of Russian territory, six days' travel from St. l'etersburg. 'lire workmen are paid only 50 cents a dsay, but they work with care and attention to detail scarcely rivaled in other parts of the world. One of the finest examples contains plums grapes. berriesand other small fruits cut from rhoditine, citrine, onyx, card, carnel ian, coral, and jade, with wonderful leaves of serpentine. Every curve is perfect and natural. The whole is sat on a base of black jasper, and that.on Orski jasper. There are pieces of jade carved at the imn perial lapidary works at Peterhoff. These are numerous fine pieces of engraved rock crystal. No instrument known can make an impression on crystal, but the Russian workmen have cut it with the aid of diamond dust and quickly revolving wheels. The most intricute patterns are thus traced. Among the examples brought over by Mr. Kunz is a large jewel casket, a copy of a famous casket in the Aurbras col lection at Vienna. The original is valued at more than $100,000. 'lhe crystal is mounted in enameled silver, studded with gems, in the style of the seventeenth cen tury. Mr. Kunz's copy is valued at $2,000. Among the Russian curios is an odd collec tion of desk pieces, including the abacus, and a set of checkers of rhodonite, The abacus is the mechanism found in every Chinese laundry, with which John reckons the price of your shirts and collars. It is never absent from the Russian counting house. Among the specimens of jade are pieces fifteen inches in width and of extraordi nary thinness. They are interesting as goological specimens, showing in their different colorings the growth of the rock from which they were taken, and they eppeal especially to thie expert bsoause of the skill with which they were cut. Other hessian curios include pieces of the odd looking enameled silver peculiar to the countrny and some curious watches. Some nnugrgets of Iluesian gold are nmtoresting from the histories attached to them, and from the fact, vouched for by Mr. Knnz, that no Russian citizen dares to have them in his possession without an accompanyino certificate showing where they came from and how he secunred them. It is a cmime under olher conditions, and if known would subject the owner to immediate ar rest. Some suocimens of French ltpidary work In the collection are equal to those that were famous in the periods of Louis XIV., XV. and XVI. Italy, Bosnia, Greece, 1nc tria, Assyria and Egypt are re presented by antique intagli. stone ecarabie and cylin derc, inreisd sardt, Rcarnelian, chalcedony, planma. sardony, essonite and hrematitir, erase detiior, ase far back as the fifth cen- tnury .. Pronounced Hopeless, Yet Saved. From a letter written by Mrs. Ada E. Hurd. of Groton, S. D., we quote: "Was taken with a bed cold, which settled on my ungs, cough set in and finally terminated in consumption. Four doctors gave me up. saying I could live but a short time. I gave mysse up to my Savior, determined if I couldnot stay with my friends on earth, I would meet my absent ones above. My husband advised me to get Dr. King's New Discovery for consumption, coubas and colds. Igavo it a trial, took in all eight bottles. It has oured me, and thank God I am now a well and hearty woman."
