G. Dun & Co.'s 'Weekly Review of Trade says: Business indications are not quite so clear. Perhaps it is partly because unfavorable weather temporarily retards trade at many points, and perhaps because uncertainties regard ing results of silver agitation and the Bering sea controversy somewhat affect finanoial and commercial calculations. but there is on the whole less evidence of im provement in distribution, and yet the prospect in the creat industries seems brighter. The movement of grain and eot ton falls off, and the sharp decline in prices is felt in many quarters, but the tone in the iron, woolen, cotton and shoe reanufactures is rather improved. The money markets are abundantly supplied, though foreign sales of stooks again cause a rise in sterling exchange; so that stocks are lower, while railroad earnings are de cidedly favorable. With unusually con flicting signs, the confidence which prevails in'business circles is still unabated. Wheat has dropped to 95;j, a decline of nearly three cents for the week, though stronger in tone at the end, receipts having been 2,500,000 bushels, and exports only 870,000 in four days. Corn is nearly a cent stronger, with exports of 1,344,000 in four days, but oats are a quarter lower, pork and lard a shade lower, oil has declined two and three-fourth cents, and coffee an eighth. Cotton is down to six and three fourth cents for middling uplands, al though receipts this week have been much less and exports greater than a year ago; the stocks at ports have diminished, but are still 444,000 bales greater than at. date last year. Silver has fallen to 40.44d. per oz., the lowest ever quoted, and at New York only 883. is paid for bullion, though no one has supposed that the silver bill could pass over a veto. Prices of commodi ties as a whole have declined three-fourths of one per cent. during the week, and are 18 per cent. lower than a year ago at this time. At Boston bad weather affects the dry goods trade, which is'yet quite satisfactory. bales of wool fair in amount, though the market farevrs buyers. At Hartford the wool trade is fair. At Philadelphia sales of dry goods are smaller thun of late, though equal to lanst year's, wool very quiet, trnde in chemicals steady and in oils fairly aetive, but other trades are quiet, with plate glass extremely low in price. At Chi esgo increase is seen in receipts of bread stuffs, dressed beef, choeese and butter, but deorease in provisions, cattle, hides and wool. Merchandise sales are equal to last year's. Unfavorable weather affects spring trade at Milwaukee, and seriously hampers trade at St. Louis, though the feeling is hopeful. At Minneapolis trade is good, though flour is very dull, and at St. Paul business is brisk, at Omalha very active, and at Kansas City improving in retail bus iness, thoagh receipts of cattle and hogs are light. Improvement is seen at Denver. The iron trade shows a better tone, in spite of very low prices. Larger sales of pig are reoorted since the recent decline, and there is less pressure to sell, Bessemer iron being steady at $14.50 at Pitteburg. Structural iron is fairly active with better prospects, bar iron is more active, and there is improved demand for plates. '. he stronger market for copper here and abroad is counted proof that a combina tion has been formed. Tin is stronger, and lead fairly active at 4.15 cents. The coal t ade is hesitating, much affected by doubt whether the New Jersey bill legalizing the combination will be signud by tee gov ernor. The woolen manufanture is doing unusually well for the season, tho.gh very low prices and sharp foreign competittion, in some branches, are seriously felt. 'The cheapness of cotton helps the manufacture the more because the demand fairly sus tains the price of goods. Merehandise exports exceeded imports in February by $21,25i,124, and yet not ex ports of geld were$:l,679,198. As the excess of exports over imports of ruerchandise and specie in seven moutls ending with Ferb rmary was $192,074,667, it is evident that sales of Amer loan stocks by foreign hold ers mast have been remarkably large. 'i'is movement seemed to hays been arrested Uatil.the later disagreement in the Bering sea matter caused much selling and lower prices for American seeurities in London. and some bankers noew expect a renewal of gold exports. The exports of domestic produce have fallen off, and for three weeks of March are but $056,000 larger at New York than a year ago, while imports have been $4,500,000 larger, indicating for the month a considerable exeess of im ports. But for the uncertainty how far foreign relations will affect money and businoss here, th1e general confidence in the future of trade would seem to be justi fied. The business failures ocourring through out the country during tho last seven days, as reported to H. G. Lun & Co., the mer cantile agency, by telegraph, number for the United States 200, and for Canada thirty-one. or a total of 231, as compared with totals of 240 last week, and 256 the week previous to the last. For the corre spending week of last year the figures were 256, representing 228 failures in the United States and twenty-eight in the Dominion of Canada. Eucklen's Arnie Salve.
