LoNDON, July 6.-The third day's polling p closed without determining, in the opinion of the leaders of either side, what may be t e ultimate relative position of the par ties. The elections to-day have been a ser pri.e to both sides, losses occurring where success was deemed certain, and gains where there was small anticipation of vie. otry. The total returns received up to one o'clock this morning show the eleo- i' tion of 128 conservatives, ninety- ti three liberals, nineteen liberal- ce unionists and four anti-Parnellites. a Up to this time the government has still a tl mnajority. Among the defeated candidates are Cunningham Graham. John Burns Was returned with a majority beyond ex pectation. When the return of Home eretery Matthews was announced it wasu received with aroans. When the announee- L utent was made of Joes. Chamberlain's elec- F tion it was greeted with yells, execrations A and cries of "Judas." The return of Chas. Russell occasioned general congratula tion. C Bismarck not Afraid. 'Banlm. Jnuy 6.-The Hamburg Naohrich. I ten, Bismarok's organ, has caused a sensa tion with an article written in reply to a I recent threatening article in the North German Gazette. The article says Bis- t asarok regards the comments as ridiculous and will not ascribe them to ministerial inspiration. The article continues: "When the prince takes his seat in the reichstag , his criticisms will not be restricted to the limits already observed. it would be inter- n eating in the highest degree if judicial pro- si ceedings were instituted. That such a stepo would be unwelcome to Prince Bismarek we do not believe. He would hardly raise an objection against a dramatic conclusion *i to his political career, even if the conse- * quences were more serious to him than possible according to state law." t. The ltattle not Decisive. 8 NEW YOun, July 6.-The Herald's Caracas ir correspondent says: A great engagement n took place near this city on July 1 between 1 the revolutionists and government troops. The losses sustained were very heavy. No decisive result was reached. As the dis- 7 patch was being sent word was received that the fighting had been renewed. If the government forces fail against Crespo's men the new administration will be forced to follow ex-Dictator Palacio into exile. Warned Them Off. OTTrnw, Ont., July 6.-A dispatch re ceived by the government to-day says the United States cruiser Corwin did not seize twenty-five Canadian vessels, but merely warned them not toenter Bering sea. Con firmation of the seizure of the Canadian transport steamer Coquillan, however, has been received. The stenmer had on board the entire season's catch of the Canadian fleet. Steamers to B.e Withdrawn. j BSrN Fancisco. July G.-The Chronicle t aaya it is generally understood that Upton's a steamship line between the orient and Port land, Ore., in connection with the Union Pacific road, will be discontinued after the arrival of the next steamer at Portland, as tee result of an understanding between the Bouther Pacific and Union Pacific. RIeserve Him for the 'take. PonTLaND, Ore., July 6.-A rumor reached here that Wilson, the murJerer of Mamie Walsh, a :13-year-old girl, has been located in the woods near Milwaukee, the scene of the crime, and that the thicketis surround ed by a body of armed men. It was said the mob intended to capture him alivo if ossible. and after pouring oil on him, burn him at the stake. An Impromptu Taking Off. WIIEELINO, W. Va., July G.-Edgar JonF, , colored, who murdered Michael Tiorney I Monday night, was taken out of jail at Weston, Lewas county, at '2:30 this morning by a large mob and hanged. l'he Georgia Melon Crop. South Georgia melon shipments are now moving freely. but the stock is inferior, being much smaller in size on aeount of 1 the severe drought which has prevailed for nearly ten weeks. The average up to d·ate is only eighteen to nineteen pounds, while in the past seasons it has run from twenty three to twenty-fiy, pounds. Another ca. lamity which has ovettaken the melon crop is "blight." A large grower has lost fully- , 25 per cent of his crop from this cause alone, and omne melon fields are now', planted in corn and cotton. It Is safe to say that (Georgia shipments a this year will not exceed one-half of list * year's crop. A large proportion of thbo shipments thus far have been eagerrly taken by buyess as soon a loaded, at prices rang _lag from $1110 to $200 per carload of 24,l000 poends. a Pelham, which is the largest shippingr pointin the melon belt, is now loading abonut fifteen cars per day. The recelpts I -eat week are expected to run about thirty oar per day, and then we may expect better frtit and somewhat lower prices.--A.tlanuta Ilee' underwear at the Bee Hive at less than ewn ptrl*a, Latandsmeethem. e- DIGGING MAMMOTHIS IN LONDON. SPrehistorie emales Brought to Light While Dggaing Sewers S .ts About throe W ths ao some laborere t ware diggitnaggWerq in thp neighborhood of " Gordo.o quare, a half-mif ebast of Regent's park, London, says the New York Sun. First they dug thtoogh a layer of made .posad aboat six tet thick. Beneath it was ten feet of yellowish brown clay, ecn Staining pieces of flint and chalk. Under this was about rte feet of sand end gravel, and then a layer of elayey loam about a foot thick. In this layer a mammoth task Swa found. i News of the interestiag rad was sent to as Dr. Hiock, secretary ot the geologial sacil a ety, and scientific experts were detailed to make further investigations. They broeght Sto Ight a considerable number of bones, II, and since then the expeo te of the geologieal [- society have been identifying the bones id and collecting information about the de e posits in which they were found. t" They have just reported the reealts of if their labors to the geological society. 'I hey say that with the bones which were found r in this clayey loam were a considerable number of seeds which belonged to plants g that are usual near ponds and in marshy f places, and have a wide range from the Arotlo ircle to the south of Europe. These sa eeds, therefore, are not helpful in deter a mining the climate of the Thames valley during the epooh of the mammoth, The loam in which the bones lay consists ,f of old river drift, and hence, as might be expected, the bones of more than one ani mal were found. They represent a small Soldent, the red deer, the fossil horse, and two mammoths. Of the mammoths one was full g own and little more of it has been ,ecovered than two large fragments of a tusk, which muat have been thirteen feet lone. The other mammoth was about half grown, end the bones belonging to it I are a very parfect lower jaw and some leg I a bones, It is probable that both animals were drowned, either by beeankmi through the surface of a frozen river or in a sudden a flood which stranded the bedies where they t were found. These are not the only remains of the mammoth that have been discovered in England. A very remarkable case of the fnding of mammoth remains was reported in 18711, when in a single pit. composed of I old river gavels. near Cambridge, the re mains of more than twenty individuals. representing thirteen species of mammals, were feund. '1 hease animals, besides the t mammoth, inclnded a hippopotamus, a rhinoceros, and a species of elephant. The remains of the prehistoric animal in sev eral crses in England have been associated with the relics of man. The first on record i was discovered about 1715, when "an ele- J phant's tooth" was found with a now fam ons flint implement that is preserved in the British museum. Of recent years either flint implements or mammoth bones have been dug up in gravels at va ions heights I above the Thames. In England. there- o fore, as well as in America and on the con- I tinent of Europe, proofs have been found that man was contemporaneous with the p:ehistoric elephant. t 'ITHE MAItK.Ta.
