THE HOPI _SN KE D CE, A Wltil Weird Cb efony i s Prsatised by the Indians of Arizait, Danuids Struggle With Writhing Serpenta AmidOhorueus of Upearthly Bounds Midaight Iseoatattias s O asve-lam pesaslve sad Terrifying Upseissle Prepitiating the Water God. The Hopi are a tribe of Indians inhabit ing some of the arid tablelands in the most desolate part of northern Arizona. They are an agricultural people, and the dance of the black water snake, which occurs every year about the end of February, is a ceremonial prayer to the great water god to send abundant moisture upon the ground before they begin their spring planting. The whole ceremony occupies 15 days and nights and is participated in by all the various sacred orders, but the feed ing of the snakes, which takes place three days before ithe culmination, is performed at night in the kiva or subterranean cham ber of the priests of one particular order. The dance is thus described by a witness in the New York Tribune: The kiva was a grotto hollowed out of the living rock. It was an oblong chamber about 25 feet in length. In the center wax burning a small fire of twigs. At the far ther end was a sort of low stage, upon whi pJrw e growing the sacred corn and ieans which had been planted with much solemn ritual in the same place 12 days ie for; This i~as the first surprise-corn groewia 'Inside, while the wintry blasts were howling without. Across the floor in front of the stage was a long pole. The walls aasi the round logs which formed the rafters were covered with symbolic figures in green, yellow, black and red, represent ing the clouds, the rain, the lightning and the rain gods or snakes. One painted snake extended the whole length of the rafter. The snake images which were to be used in the performance were piled just in front of the growing corn. They were of enor mous size and startlingly realistic. 'I Iia A IIOPI INDIAN GIRL. The performers to the number of about 80 were stripped to the breechcloth, and with turtle shell rattles fastened to their right legs were dancing in unison with slow chorus. The dancers moved in dou ble file in a semicircle from one side to the other of the kiva and then faced about and danced back again. The songs were like all Indian songs, weird, slow, monotonous and oft repeated, and the burden of all was a prayer to the water gods and an invocation of the spirits of the thunder, the cloud and the rain. At last, nearly at the midnight hour, two of the performers took hold of the long pole stretched across in front of the stage, and fastening cords to its ends drew It quickly to the rafters. We now saw that it was attached to a curtain. The curtain was covered with symbolic figures in various colors, mostly representations of various mythical deities, and all very artistically drawn. Across the lower part of the cur tauin were six large holes, closed for the time by movable flaps. Six naked performers stepped out from the rest, and going to the front took up each a snake and disappeared behind the curtain. Another fastened a sort of tuba or band over one shoulder and passed through it one of the largest snakes, grasp ing it tightly by the neck under his right arm. Another, an old man, naked like the rest, but with a small pouch hanging from his neck, then put over his head a mask painted white, with long plumes. Sud denly arose a chorus of most unearthly sounds from behind the curtain as if a whole menagerie had broken loose. This was the signal. All at once the six snakes which had been carried behind the curtain darted their enormous heads through the holes in its lower part, one at each hole. They caesme out, head, neck and almost half their length, moving their heads from side to side as if singling out is spectator for attack, their white teeth gleaming, their jaws opening wide and again closing with a snap, and their red forked tongtes constantly darting in and out of their mouths. At thasame time the performer who had taken the snake under his arnm seemed about to be overpowered by its strength. It struggled to escape, twist ing its ugly neck about his arm, darting its tongue into his very face, and than, rearing up, would throw itself out with a mighty spring so that he had to clasp both arms around it and press it tightly against his naked bosom to hold it. It was simply awful. All this time the old matt in the white mask was moving rapidly from one snake to the other, sprinkling upon the head of each sonie of the sacred meal from the pouch hung at his neck. The snakes stretched out their long necks as he ap proached, sometimes three or four feet be yond the curtain, pushing their hsauls against each other and darting out their tongues in their eagerness to get at the meal and their anger at the delay. As a head was thrust out the old man would throw his right aris around the stimy neck and hold it close against his side while lie allowed it to lick up the meal which lie held out to it in his lft hand. As the snake turned and twisted it seent ed to require his whole strength to hold it. At the sause time the other man was strug gling with the other serpent, the sweat roli I hg down his nuked body and his mus cles standing out like thoseton the lsocootn. Thueniearthlycries and roars behind the curtain never ceased for it moiment, while the dincers at either side kept tip all the while t heir monotonous chant a-step to the time of the turtle rattles. The efect was the result of an ingenious mechuisnlm of springs inside the bodies of the snakes, with clever acting on the part of the performers, but the illusion was al most perfect. It was as if one saw the lost souls In hell struggling in the grasp of the infernal spirits. Dolts Have iriven Out the Buttons.
