Nelson tory, of Semnan, Is the Latest Candidate for the East Slde HIS SOOM HAS NOW SEEN LAUNCHED. Alderso and Lynde Started It and Col. Bradshaw Has Something to Say on the Subject. Nelson itory, of Boseman, is the latest candidate for the United States senator.whip from the east side. His boaom has been started by Major W. W. Allderson and T. J. Lynde, republican nembirll.n-e.lmct of the next legislature. Mr. Story In a pioneer of the Uallatin valley and a business man whose sue ct.i speaks for Itself. lie Is a million aire and would be able to travel in any company to be found in the United States senate. Hie is a portly gentle man, tall, and wears a full beard, which is whitened by the snows of many Mon tana winters. He doesn't gamble in sugar, which is a very good point for a United States senator, and if selected for the honor he desires he could be depended upon to look after the Inter ests of the great farming and stock growing section section which he has assisted in developing. Though an earnest supporter of Anaconda during the capital campaign. Mr. Story came to Helena on Monday to see the great c'elebration I over Helena's victory. While perhaps he might have enjoyed more a similar celebration In Anaconda., he still showed the proper spirit by tcoaing to the big hurrah. He only staid one day. t'ol. C. G. Bradshaw. an intimate friend of Mr. Story, accompanied that g.Entl'man to Helena, and is still here. tol. Ilradshaw has been prominent in Gallatin county for many years. He is a republican in politics, and his friends .ay he is one of the shrewdest politicians in the state. It is reported on good authority that the colonel was theil chief instrument in the election of Gtov. Rickards. Col. Bradshaw is a Kentuckian by birth, has lived in 11ll nois, and is a Montanlan by adoption. Like all Kentuckians he is an orator of no mean ability.. The colonel is stopping at the Stock well, where he was visited last night by an Independent reporter, who asked about the inception of the Story boom. The colonel would not admit that he was engineering it, but in reply to ques tions he did say that such a boom had been started. "Yes." said he, "it is now definitely settled that the Hon. Nelson Story, of Bozeman, Is a candidate for the United States senate, and will be pushed with all the vigor at the com mand of his friends in the republican party of Gallatir. county and other counties of the eastern part of the state. The Hon. W. W. Alderson and the Hon. T. J. Lynde, republican members-elect of the legislature, are the ones that feel that It would be a source of pride and gratification to see their friend and earnest co-laborer electei to this ex alted position." "Now, see here," said the colonel in the course of a general conversation, "I want to say that, while it has noth ing whatever to do with Mr. Story's senatorial aspirations, the item you printed about his posting upon his fence a placard reading: 'A vote for Helena is a vote to remove our college,' was not correct. Mr. Story did not put that sentiment there. " Being asked where he did put it the colonel said: "Why. he didn't post it anywhere. I was with Mr. Story when some of the Anaconda shouters came to him and asked him to allow them to put the sign on his fence. Mr. Story wouldn't permit it. and afterwards they nailed it to a telephone pole near the fence. Mr. Story couldn't help that, you kncw." Arrivals at the Grand Central. H. C. Henderson. J. McLrath, W. Obv't Report. o! aI.¶ ' '|n PA.TRIO TIC LI VINOSTB N Its Loyal Ladies Had Mush to DO With the Vicetory. To The Independent: In the grand and impressive services in the auditorium on Monday night, every loyal heart beat responsive to the well merited eulogies passed on lion. W. A. t'lark, ICditor Quinn and to the noble men and women of Butte who were true to themselves, to the state of Montana, and to the city of Helena on the 6th inst., when patriotism and boodle were the contending forces. Nor was there the slightest desire with any one in that vast audience to withhold honor from any person or place in the state that had comntributed to any ex tent to the glorious victory achieved. Representatives of a few other points in Montana, in pointing briefly and modestly to their contribution to the **Waterloo," only increased the all but boundless volume of enthusiasm that swayed and surged the immense assemn bly. The want of time and lateness of the hour prevented mention of other places and parties that had furnished their quotas in the day of Montana's peril. A word could have been said to the credit of Park county and her capital town. Livingston. where, although a few weeks ago a fearful 'defeat was threatened, our hosts emerged from the conflict with 800 majority for Helena. While, of course, a number of thie male population stood to their guns like true men. it should not be forgotten that much praise is due the ladies of the Livingston club, whose earnest prayers, and modest but eficient efforts. should, perhaps, be regarded as the main force which saved our town and county from the shame and disgrace of an inglorious disaster. All praise to the noble women of UIv Ingston. under the leadership of their president. Mrs. Hefferlln, who, though, all but unseen and unheard, were un doubtedly a most important factor in the victorluos struggle of the 8th of No vember. Noble women of Livingston and Mon tana at large, remember in the future that you have a weapon in prayer, which must ever be victorious. A closing word as to the Helena Hog. Those of us who had the honor and the pleasure of attending the right royal re ception given at the palatial home of a son of Erin on the 13th Inst., would not object to other proofs of Helena's selfishness. The fact learned at the grand reception that our honorable and generous host had his birth about sixty years ago within tko miles of the great Anaconda chieftain's birthplace, did not in the least detract from our en thusiasm, as we felt like exclaiming, "All hall to our Irish frtind of Helena, whose surname is Cruse!" A PARK COUNTY MAN. OFF FOR FARiO. Mrs. Aaron Hershfield Goes t.Dgfend the Suit Against Her. Mrs. Aaron Hershfield left on the east bound Northern Pacific express yester day for Fargo. N. D.. to be present dur ing the trial of the suit brought by her husband, Aaron Hershfleld, to annul the marrrlage which took place in Chi cago last year. Col. C. B. Nolan, of counsel for Mrs. Hershfleld, will follow his client to Fargo and defend her case. On the same train with Mrs. Aaron Hershfield went Ex-Judge N. W. Mc Connell, who will represent the husband In the matter, and Mrs. L. H. Hersh field, sister-in-law of the plalntl.*. Most of the evidence 4n the case will be in the form of depositions, which were taken In Helena, and the substance of which were published in The Independent. The Canvass of the County Vote. Everything is in readiness for the official canvass of the vote of Lewis and Clarke county except the board of can vassers. Commissioner Beach has not yet returned to the city, and Commis sloner Muth left yesterday for a short hunting trip. The board has until Sat urday to canvass the vote. Commls sloner Horsky, being a candidate for th," legislature, does not care to sit on the canvassing board. The law pro vides that if at the time of canvass Ing the votes one or more of the county v.ommieslor.ers are absent, the county ofniers shall take the vacant place or places Itp tht, following order: the treasurer, the assessor, the sheriff. The county canvassing board must meet within tenl days (Sundays excepted) at ter the election. One of the Charter Members.
