FARMERS' CLUBS. We hear ef the organization of more than the uiual Dumber of farmers' clubs. But therek is rcom and use for twice as many more. All the courts of the country have been turned into debating clubs for the im )provement of the lawyers, and they are thus at heavy expense to the farmers, preparing themselves for prompt debaters. The farm ers will never have their rights in legisla tion until they are prepared to demand it. Necither the old man on the farm or his son in school has any excuse to stay away from these valuable irurseries of learning and clhools of preparation for the great foren sic fields of life. The old and ellete saying that "an old 4og cannot learn a new trick," is In no sense arpplicable to the hu manl race, and it is only quoted by the igno rant and thoughtless. There stands before every reader of histo ry, thousandý of cases not only to refute the idea that men are too old to learn ; but to prompt themi to make their last days their ,best days inl ripe wistlo and good works. cato commenced the study of the Greek language after he was eighty-eight, and be calue, a fine linguist in the language. Pin tirch commenced and finished the Latin af ter he was seventy-eight, and Ludivious wrote time lmistory of his times after lie was one hundred and fifteen years old. Frank lin did not began his philosophical studies until lie was fifty years old. 4nd there are Iulindlreds of cases where men Tave learned ine lessons in old age by which they have attainel to eminence in the world. Then ],t no one say he is too old to take part in these clubs, or too old to learn. A large mumass of mankind go into decrepitude and iambecility prematurely by neglecting to ex ercise their minds. There are frequent cases where men of eighty years are our best and clearest head ed judges. They have lived lives of mental nactiuua and have thus retained all their brill iance in thought to green old age. If you " islh to retain the use of the limbs, walk ev ery day, and it the mind is to be kept vigor ous it must be used in closely investigating legitimate questions. Second childhood wcoines much soonier to the idle minded. Then as the farmer, old or young, is called on by his new position in the commercial, ,political and industrial world, to assume new and responsible positions, let himin use every agency to prepare himself. We must be able to meet other professions and Indus-i tri:es in the market and the farm, or settle down to a greatly subordinate position in Jife.-lowa Rejister. SILHEIIFF'S SALE. JOHN II.
