I to the wealth of the mill-owner and that
those men, as a class, are republicans.
No greater fallacy was ever uttered in
the world, and I believe that I can dem
onstrate it to you in a very few words.
For instance, I believe that in the viecn
ity of this town you have several hun
dred men eonmpo2-ed in mills and mines
If they are copper mines, if they are lead
mines, then they come within the opera
tion of the tariff an,! are, to a certain ex
tent protecte(d. I believe your miners'
wages are 83.59 a day. Now, suppose,
assu!ning that these are mines of the
chiss of which come within the protec
ti-o duties, that that legislation is r
pealed, t hat the price of lead is reduced
Ito one and a half cents a pound, the price
of copper is reduced, because if there is
a tarinf of five cents a pound on copper
and it is taken off. why the influx of for
eign copper into our market necess:rily
red- :-ces the price of our own. Now, what
is the effect: The effect is just this:
that the people who are operating such
mines in this country must either pro
duce ta:eir c:ynper at a less cost or they
must shat down their mines and go out
of the 1b': a 0.. - :he copp.er is not of
.any valr . b;'cer is th? lead; it is the
labor upon it, the cost of its development
into a nmarketablc article which gives it
any value. You may take this Granite
IMountain out here and let it be made of
solid gold or solid silver or copper or
le'd, and as long as it remains in that
st ate it is of no use to men. It must be
minied put into the commerce of the
world, before it acquires any value, and
Sthat value, except in the case of gold and
silver, is ,,iven to it by the labor which is
expendedl upon it in making it a market
able article.
We have a home market. to the value of
which is nearly $5 \.0O:),0O0.I0t) in a year,
I more than half the value of all the rest. of
the world -put tog;ether. Is it any wonder
that free tr'-ade England, which produces
)othing. which manufactures everything,
w:ents to come and compete with us at
lhomen' Take down the barriers of the
