CLERK AND RECORDER- I hereby respectfully announce myself a can didate for the office of Clerk and Recorder of Deer Lodge county, subject to the action of the Republican County Convention. WILLIAM F. FURAY. The Illinois State Convention of the American Party was held at Chicago on Auigutst 9 and was at tended by a large and enthusiastic delegation, several being members of the old Knownothing party. A set of resolutions were adopted, which certainly are plain-spoken and are undoubtedly the sentiments of the great American people. Among them are resolutions de manding a restriction of immigra- I tion, new and stringent naturaliza tion laws, excluding all communists, socialists, nihilists, anarchists, pan pers and criminals from citizenship, but not interfering with the vested 1 rights of foreigners. Presidential terms should be six years, and. the incumbent ineligible for re-election. Non-resident aliens should not be ] allowed to hold real or personal i property in this country. Govern mnent arbitration for labor is recom mended, and the government own ership of the telegraph and its ab sorbtion into a postal system advo- 1 cated. One of the greatest evils that could be conceived is that of en- g couraging the taste of young boys for the gaming table. Minors may 6 be observed at the Pihilipsburg faro tables, occupying prominent places, j with a stack of chips in front of them, and betting as recklessly and as naturally as though they were old hands at the business. It cer- tl tainly is not a good practice and e' does not reflect credit upon those t` who permit it, and we can but think that it is more of neglect than in- c tent on the part of those conduct- b ing the games. It is to be hoped that they will take the matter in fr hand and see that the "kids" are Q not allowed to "copper the jack"l until they shall have reached man hood's state; because, though sonime k, of them may alp ear frsch e,.ough sl and know nmore than. a manl, still E they will have time enoughl to exer- a, else the privileges of a man wheni they shall have a.tained their nma- til joritites. Week after week, year after year, the Financial and Miining Record of New York, is. noticed to contains its regular correspondence from the great Comstock Lode, at Virginia, Nevada. The ever faithful eor respondent being Lone other than James Delevan, (well known by the writer), who has resided on the fa mous lode for almost a lifetime, and is as thoroughly familiar with all its workings and the transactions of many of the manipulators as others are with the streets of the town. lie is continually found at his post, and his letters and infor mation can be relied upon as being as nearly correct as it is possible for any one to obtain. The resumption of the editorial (cair of the Helena Independent by J. S. Dickerson has been received with general satisfaction by the people of Philipsburg and Granite. -e ITdependent has lent great as ri +Coe to the development of this a'r a mining district. It is claimed that a company has been organized to work the Young America properties, just above town near Hasmark, and that the capi talization has been fixed at $3,000, 000. It is to be hoped that the re port may prove true as the mine is considered by those being in a good position to know, to be one of the best properties in the vicinity of Philipsburg. It has 1been in litigation for some years past, which prevented any work be inm done upon it, but it is now un derstood that things have been sat isfactorily arranged and that no further hindrance remains in the way of development. Hugh M. Brooks. alias Maxwell, has at last paid the penalty of his horrible crime. Ile was hanged at St. Louis at 8:55 o'clock, Friday. - August 10th. Henry Langraf, who murdered his sweetheart some tim( ago, was hanged at the same time. It looked for a long time as though the law would be chl:ated out of its prey and that Brooks' sentence would be communted, but Governor Morehonse of Missouri, was firm and could see no reason why the sentence of the courts should not be carried out. That dread disease, the yellow fever, appears to be making its an nual visit to the Southern states, and has started in on a small scale at Jacksonville, Pla. Quarantine has been established at Mobile, Ala., against the former place, and no baggage, persons or freight can be handled except under such re strictions as are establisted by the board of health. H1h, for Montana! From the reports in the news papers Butte is proving to the world more and more every day the permanence and extent of her great mineral deposits. The latest deal in the mining way is that of the Silver Bow group, owned by A. J. Davis aed several other;:, for a mill ion and a quarter. The deal has not yet been consummated, but is in a fair position. The death of the gallant general, Phil. Sheridan, which occurred at Nonquitt, Mass., at 10:-20 e. M., August 5th, cast a deep shadow of gloom over the entire country. IIe was born at Somerset, Ohio, March 6th, 18:31, and, consequentlh;, was 57 years of age at the time of his death. The remains were buried at Washington, Saturday, August 11th. _____-- t The Butto Inter Mountain says that George DI). Eastin, formerly editor of the Independent, is to es tablish a news bureau at HIelena. Mr. Eastin certaillyv deserves suc cess and there is but little doubt but that he will attain it. Harry Spaulding was thrown from a freight train while stealing a ir'e at I Quindy, Ill., and had his back broken. lie cannot survive. Eleetric Bitters. Reports from the Maginnis country in dicate considerable activity among pros pectors and miners. It is said, in this respect, that the m :.ing interests at Mlaiden and vicinity have not been so brisk for several years as now. It is stated that active development york on Towsley gulch, a few miles from Marysville, will be begur this month. There is a vein of galena ore in this dis triot that has been opened ap through ivc locations, by open cuts about 75 or ;0 feet apart. This is an immense body )f ore and is attracting the attention of ielena capitalists. We are informed :hat 85,000( was offered for a half interest .n one of the locations.
