The only hint one gets of the great author is in the impression she gi\vs of seeing and noting everything: of wevsghing and estimating every one about her a'.n having a marvelous concentra tion of attention; but her reserve is in finite.-Cor. New Orleans Times-Demo crat. Parental Influence in Persia. Besides their lack of proper schooling, the Persian children are not taught sufficiently by their parents what is right and good. Fathers will not only not for bid their children to be cruel to poor cats and dogs, or to servants and slaves, but they will often stand by and encourage them when torturing poor brutes or tor menting people. They also do not teach them to be truthful, but on the contrary, rather, incline them to tell lies. These two things-cruelty and untruth--are especially what is bad about the children in Persia.--Wolf von Schierbrand in Cos mopolitan. Temperature and Electric Currents. Late observers have found that the temperature of a wire conveying electric currents varies wiih the air pressures surrounding it. A wire which remained dull at ordinary atmospheric pressure became incandescent in a moderate vac uum, while on the other hand, a current which would fuse a wire at ordinary pressure will scarcely Lredden it if the pressure is sufficiently increasd. -Ar kansaw Traveler. Absurdity of Angels' Wings. The angel in art has got to go. Mr. Beard, of the New York Art Students' League, in a lecture has shovn the ab surdity of giving to the artistic angel the wings of a bird, showing by drawirngs the impossibiihty unatomically and the absurdity artistically of the conventional art angel.-Chicago Herald. A constant and disagreeable sweet taste has been reported in one case as a result of the substitution of saccharin for sugar. Contagion in Court. The state analyst of New Jersey, in a recent trial, when called upon to take an oath as witness, avoided kissing the Bible on the ground that he might con tract disease by so (loi.,, saying: "So many different persons have kissed that book that I do not think it safe to touch my lips to it." The court held that the witess must kiss the book, an.nd he re 1,::tutly did sd. This se'mn; like a tri £Li_ matter, and yet itr ii ht ~e a serious one. The danger of coatracti-g disease in this way is not imaginary. Until courts so disinfect the Bible on which oaths are taken as to make the act cf kissing it safe, we would advise the prac ticing of a device which the writer has for years employed, viz.: to kiss the fin gers with w-hich he holds the book. Scierce. Dreaded by Hlotel Clerks. A hotel clerk is presumed to be equal to any assault at words inflicted upon him, and, as a rule, this presumption is correct, but there is one individual whose name is legion, who is reponsibL:e for all the suicides of hotel clerks throughout the country. It is the many who tell you something and adds '"eh?" or *"ain't it?" after each sentence. He await:, your indorsement of what he is saying., and if at any stage of the conversation you fail to r -nid he will pull your sleeve. and insist on your sa' it; ."-yes."
