Aiken, of Butte, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Rodgers, in town. Carl Bergstrand returned Sunday eve ning after a week's sojourn in the Capi t ICity. Mrs. J. W. Dawson is convalescing from the recent indisposition m hich she has undergone. Rev. Wm. Hall will preach at Granite to-night in K. of L. hall, also in the Burg Friday night at 8 o'clock. Miss Alice Rodgers returned last week after a two weeks' visit to her sister, Airs. Aiken, in the Silver City. Benj. Pizer and his daughter, Miss v'ary, returned home Sunday evening from Helena after a week's absence. Mrs. Thos. Morse, the landlady at the Windsor hotel, Drummond, is seriously ill. Dr. Allefi, of the Burg, is attending her. Col. George W. Morse was over in the Bitter Root country on a trip last week, and shipped several carloads of sheep and hogs to his slaughter-house near the Burg. Mrs. P. McDonel, who has been suf fering from rheumatism for some time past, has entirely recovered, and has taken a trip to Deer Lodge, on a visit to friends and relatives. H. L. Hoyer, who was reported in our last issue as having started a new drug store in a portion of the postoffice store, has sold that department to the Buskett Mercantile Co., of Granite. The Burg is very much in need of at least one close carriage. It certainly does not look right for the mourners at a funeral to occupy a vehicle that is only suitable for pleasure driving. Poad Supervsor Cole is having a good piece of work done in grading California street through the hill to Broadway. It will be quite a convenience to residents on the hill north of town. John Adams, employed at the Hope of fice, was thrown from a bucking cayuse on Monday and received some very pain fal though not serious injuries, and is able to be in the office to-day. Rev. S. E. Snyder, presiding elder of Helena district, preached to a fair audi ence at Morse's hall last evening. lIe says they ierlnd putting in a good live man here, and will soon work up the building of the church. Tho republican primaries for the elec tion of delegates to the county conven tion will be held on Saturday, Septem ber 8-one week later than that of the democrats. The polls will be open from 4 until S o'clock P. M. Almost every day we hear some gigan tic kick from the army of teamsters haul ing lumber and freight from the depot to the Burg, Granite and the millsites. They claim the road is in a terrible con dition, and that after a rain it is almost impassable. Among the numerous new buildings being erected at Kirkville is a large hotel by John Nolan. There are several new boarding-houses and buildings for other purposes nearing completion. If Kirkville continues at this rate it will soon be a close rival to the Burg. Mrs. C. E. Miller, wife of Charlie Muil ler, returned Sunday fron an extended visit to Oakland, California, and other cities on the coast. The lady went west for the benefit of the health of herself and child, which, we are pleased to an nounce, is considerably improved. Mr. Miller went tc Missoula to meet her. The past two weeks would have been a choice opportunity for some enterpris ing party to start a sprinkling cart. Clouds of dust have blown through the streets which is almost suffocating. It is safe to say there is not a business man in town who would not contribute from $2 to $5 per month to have it subsided. Frank Thomas and Mrs. Boyce, both living at Kirkville, had some misunder standing regarding a cabin that Thomas had for sale and Mrs. Boyece had bought and made first payment on. She insisted on taking possession and Thomas would not have it. Some of Mrs. Boyce's friends took her part and quite a lively time ensued, when Thomas drew a re volver in his defense, but did not shoot. He was arrested and plead guilty in Judge Labrie's court and paid a fine of $25 and trimmings. Wm. Pickett, who has been working in Coulter gulch, went out for a hunt last Monday, and not returning when he had agreed to, some friends went to search for him. After looking for some time they finally sighted him stooping behind a fallen tree and they supposed he was watching some game; but as they ap proached him he raised to his feet and asked, "Who are you ? " and started to walk away, but only went a few yards when he dropped dead. On investiga tion, some blood was noticed on the limb of a tree, and the mystery was soon solved. Just as he was passing, the tree fell and a limb struck him on the back of the head, which proved fatal. No inquest was held. Pickett had no relatives here. He is supposed to have a brother in T*exas. He was about 40 years of age ted umarried. iH. L. Rodgers and mother arrived home from Helena Sunday evening. Mrs. M. H. Bryan, mother of the Bryan brothers of TFii. MAIL, arrived in town Sunday evening, and will reside he ro. A teleophone dispatch to THE MAIL says that James McGurren was shot and inslauilvy killed at Gold Creek this morn ing by Win. Allis. The trouble was over some cattle. Allis escaped. The water will be turned off at 8 o'clock this evening, the new pipe having burst in conseiOlnce of too much press:ur. It was found necessary to put in an air pipe. The water will be turned on again to morrow noon. Two miners named W. J. Curnow and James Cowling were seriously if not fa tally injured by an explosion in the Gran ite mine about noon to-day. iBoth will lose their sight and will probably be greatly diisfigured for lie. The democratic primaries for the elec tion of delegates to the county conven tion will be held on Saturday, Septem ber 1. The polls will be open between the hours of 2 and 7 P. 3i. The conven tion will be held at Deer Lodge the fol lowing Saturday-September 8. The case of the Northern Pacific & Montana railroad company vs. the own ers of section 11, was heard at Deer L&,ge last Saturday. An undivided two thirds of said section 11 has been con demned. The defendants have restrained them as to the other undivided third of that section, the injunction being con tinued and the defendants' bonds in creased from 81.'_00 to 810,000. The ill results of boys being allowed to gamble were shown up last night when John Roberts claiimed to have won a bet wlhich was disuted by a dealer at one of our faro table.. Thereupon he demanded all he had lost, claiming to be a minor but 19 years old. Upon the dealer's re fas:!l to liquidate Roberts attempted to draw a revolver, but was arrested, tried and fined 825 arnd costs: in default of paymc:,t ho was sent to jail. OUR MAIL SERVICE. How Iotten It Is, and How Often Somie of Our Subscberber Get Their Papers. There is something decidedly rotten in the postotice service somewhere between here and ranite. Almnost daily we are in receipt of complaints from people claiming to have not received THE MAILT. Among the number may be mentioned the B4uskett Mercantile Co., who have made frequent and ineffectual kicks for the past tiree mont1hs. A paper has been directed to this firm in o"ar usual Granite postoffice lot every Thursday, and sent throvgh the post ofice. It is impossible, if the duties of distribution are properly attended to, for ai:y one person to miss getting this paper, as the whole lot for each town s done up in one package, in the usual newspaper style, and the whole bundle would ave to be lost in order for anyone to miss a copy. As an example of the kicks we receive every once in awhile, the foilowing ex tract from a letter from the BNskett Merca:ntile Co., will show th;n there is postoth'ce reform needed somewhere when it is impossible for a paper to reach a prominent business firm Eike this not once in two months: GENT:MEN--- I have seen but one copy of TTE M,.4Il in :.mare than two months, and that was left here by Mr. Congdon. After a convermz'ion with him, I drew the inference that you intended senrdin;' your paper to us re:~eiarrly. I considered it t very spicy sheet and one which con tained 11 the local news and therefore wanted it. Yours. T. C. BAKLR. BUSKETT ATERCAr1;TILE Co. And the paper has positively been sent every week during the time mentioned. As an extra precaution and a preventive against kicks a half dozen extra papers were sent to the Granite postoffice last week to appease in a measure the wrath of those who paid for a paper and some one else got it. M1ariied. SurrM-- TunF.n - On Wednesday even ing, August 29, 1883, by Rev. Arthur B. Howard, Eugene Smith to Miss Katie Hi. Turner. The wedding seeson which was recent ly inaugurated in Philipsburg bids fair to continue. Eugene Smith and Miss Katie H. Turner, both well known and highly esteemed residents of Philips burg, were married last evening at 7 o'clock at the residence of the groom on Granite street. A number of relatives and friends of the happy couple were present. A reception and wedding sup per was partaken of after the ceremony was performed. The Philipshurg brass band serenaded the newly-married couple, and the festivities were inter spersed with sweet music. Builiann: Notes. A. Wyman has just completed a two story frame dwelling in Parker's ad dition. Twohy Bros. are building an addition to their oflice for storing lumber. Bowen Bros. & Thompson are putting up an addition to their foundry to be used for a machine shop. Win. Hammond has about completed an addition to his dwelling on Broadway. Imkamp and L.awrence's new brick block on Broadway is rapidly nearing completion. NEW CHICAGO NOTES. A Fe w Jottinrs From Onr Correspon dent Down the Valley. Coleman as a candidate for sheriff of Deer Lodge onuity. He has ever filled the office ,itlh honor and dignity, and will no S:-:t be re-elected. A n noted question: Which has the most roughs, according to size, Drum mond or New Chicago? It has been demonstrated of late that each place has its-full share of this undesirable element. UNIT. The new Catholic church at Dillon was dedicated by Bishop Brondel, as sisted by Fathers Van de Ven and Dols. The church was christened "St. Rose of Lima." Mr. S. E. Larabie had the building in which his daughter lay sick, burned with all its contents, after her removal to the residence. That settles the smallpox there.-New Northwest. New Northwest. Last Saturday afternoon at Deer Lod;ge Lew. Coleman lost a valamble horse. While the stableman was hitching the horse up. a dog ran between the animal's legs and frightened him. The horse started to run, slipped and broke his leg. The animal had to be killed. Messrs. C. A. Nuss, Wm. Wilson and C. P H. Bielenberg this-week located the Moulton, Deer Lodge and other silver bearing lead, near the head of IRace Track, and about 7 or 8 miles this side of the ;iidney nune. Specimens of ore, a few feet trom the surface, show well in brittle silver and indicate good locations. -New Northwest. If any man s:ys that Deer Lodge is not a live, progressive town he will be sub ject to the ordinance against slander. We started in to incorporate this town, and without a hobble, just as expeditiously as the laws permit, the purpose has been ac complished, oticers elected and all the machinery made ready to work. No town in .Mont'ana, that we know of, ever went direct lv ahead and did what it start ed out to do with a better right to be patted on the back for well done, than has Deer Lodge: Now let it be demon strated to the opposition that ;neorpora tion is a good thing for Deer Lodge. New N\orthwest. John Barry, of the firm of Barry & Dwyer, stone contractors at the lower works, was drowned in the plunge bath at Gregson Springs Tuesday evening.
