Our next legislation should make some provisions for a Board of Mineralogy and Mining. TltAVELnus are drr.-ppinfer in uaiiy now to take a look at our valley and consider the prospaets for a home among us. Others are here to ex-, amine our surrounding mines and determine as nearly as may be their promises for an investment sufficient to develop them and bring their treasure to the light. In both these rrspecu our county ofTers unparal leled inducements. Xo more pro mising and beautiful homes can be found or made anywhere. The min eral of oar surrounding mountains is awaiting the baud of cmerprT-lt and pluck to prove their great wealth Mr. James StiEWAitT, the "v-11 known superintendent of G:I;ner & Saulsbary's line of stages, returned from .a trip to the Quvj toas via -Maricopa, directly across the oou try. The Herald is favored with a circular fro 11 the managers of the great Centennial Co'ton Exposition to be held in New Orleans one year hence an 1 which is expected to ran five or six months. The Exposition, ns the name indicates, is in honor of the centennial anniversary of cotton exportation from the United S ates, and will be devoted to the following exhibits: Agriculture ;I1 rticulture; Raw nr.d Manufactured Products of Ores, Minerals and Woods ; Furni ture and Accessories; Textile Fab rics, Clothing, and Accec3 iries ; the Industrial Arts; Alimentary Piol u;t3; E Juration, and Instruction; Works of Art; an 1 Pisciculture. No rent will b3 charged cither foreign or homo exhibitors, but the latter will be chirgcd a suitable entrance fee. Mr. Samuel Mullen is secreta ry, to whom communications should be addressed. The Mohave Miner is dissatisfied with the "Resources of Arizona" : :.d complains that its county has not been treated fairly in thnt work. AVe hardly think it would tend to advan ce the interest cf that county if prominence was given the many abandoned mines and idle mills that ate found in many of its districts. "We think the compiler of the "He sources" has shown tact and judge ment in not calling public attention to the repeated failures which have marked the history of mi'.ing in Mohave. For this he deserves the thanks of the people of that region As to the charge that he has neglec ted the farming interests of Mohave county, the least said about it the better. There is water enough in the Sandy to irrigate one ranch. The main canal skirt- along the foothills on tin north sid e cf the vsil.-v, taking a? dir :ct lines is possible, and thereby cutting off same very valuable Uigiits or lauu belwe ;n the projecting points of the foot hilis, 111 s.o.'ili iaSvan.:es se .'erai sett ions It is intended to run lateral canals out on the north s-i Ij from the main canal, beginning at a sufd cient distance above to carry the water into these bights at, a sufficient height to reach all the land suitable for cultivation m them. Th is all the land fro 11 the very foot of the mountains to the river will be under the iiifl itricj of tins in tin cin.il. The main c inal will b3 fi.Uh?d westward, by next O :to'):r, aj far as the Ag.ia Fria, a d'ntaine of s mc thirty-live or forty miles; bui ulti mately it will be carried westward as far as possible to the foot of the White Tank mountains, an i thence southwesterly along their base till the Gila river is reached or the canal approaches it as near as m ly be de sire!. When the canal has been carried to its farthest extent H will probably afford w.itsr to a s -c io 1 of available laud of not less than 200,030 acres, and it m ty be a gre it deal more, for it will very nearly cover a country thit will avjrage fifiy by ten miles in length. The addition of this great s ;opj of farming land to that alrea.iy un der cultivation, will lend to our val ley an importance that the outside world will mt be long in recogniz ing and nuking use of, espeei ally as its produsti ve p vers and range of products arc something wonder- ful. Add to the ordinary grain and fruit prod ictsof a temperate c'imate the semi-tropical fruits, gripes, or anges, lemon-, limes, tigs, olives anil the like, cotton, sugir (for the ordi- nar' sugar cane flourishes here), up land lice, jute, and so on, and one has some idea of the resourcs of our valley, for there is no question of its capability to produce each and every cn-3 of tlie prolucts named. Add to the agricultural and horti cultural capability of the valh-y, its capacity for the production of beef, butter, and pork, for which products it can not be excelled i i the United States, and then add to this its im portance n3 a center of as mag nificent grazing and mining country as the sun shines upon anywhere, and then a Id to thistha water power and opportunity a'fjrded for manu factories by the fall of twenty-five feet in the great body of water that cemfis down the Arizona Cana.1 aud we can f arm some i lea of the posi tion the Salt River valley will occu py in the future historj' 01 our Ter ritory; nor will it hi a distant future before that position will have b;:en gained..
