J city had well setty yn simple and gr nt'.e prosperity, tee a- once mere rudely awakened toihe fact that there is IurUteg danger yet in our midst by the crack of the ristoi and the san guinary scene of last Saturday night in which, no doubt, a pcaeefnl, quiet man lost lis life. There is a word to be said as to the caue which led up to the murder a word to the people of tbe town and a word to the gentlemen who have the special welfare of our city to look after; but for the present, lest our motives be misconstrued and plain ead to undesirable results, and account of onr obligations to )nalitic laws of the larul, we ly to say that we think tbc lias come wiieu nu cvii iiilu from time to tims has been com plained of bitterly by some of our citizens, should be in some manucr put under control and its brazen effrontery and inilecency removed from our principal business centers where our wivesrnothers, fisters and cbi'drcn aro scandalized and daily and hourly intuited by Its presence. The Bisbee bandits have been condemned to lake their flight into the nnsterious hereafter from ropes' ends on the 28:'u of Match, between the hours of 10 ana 5 o'clock. Judge Pinuey, in sentencing them, snid thry were to be pitied rather than ahu ed that they should so far for get their fluty to their country and their G cT, so far forget the teachings of Christian mothers as to permit ilii-inselvt's to be lost to humanity and society, to become so lost to cv- eryihing human and decent as to commit the heinous crime of which lh y were convicted. It is indeed n pitiable sight pitiable to sec men in the veiy prime of life and phys- j ii-al vigor, so utte rly destitute of moral couiage, such very cowards in life, as to be willing to resort to robl-ciy to g.vn money, thereby ac knowledging their leability to stand the test of manhood, which requires long, faithful and lionest endeavor. It is Ihis quiet, persistent ttst that shows manhood and moral courage As men yiow weaker and weaker, in these, they resort to illegitimate means of obtaining money, til! fin-illy Ihey so far for-ret their man hood as to murder- their fellow men, 'n the mcst cowardly manner, for the purpose of gaiuing a few dollars. The net bas cot "the least spark of bravery or of nerve; on tho other hand, it is but the ant of the brag-era. dec to the arrant coward. -Their act will cost in the end nine lives; four by their cowardly rifles and five by the vengeance of the noose. Cochise county is to be congratu lated. Her outraged honor is now to receive- a terrible vindication, but a just one. Her efficers and citi zens have proved themselves to be of that true metai whereof Hie no blest of communities are ni.iru fsctuied, and should receive the plaudits which their terrible and successful struggle with the worst criminal class in existence shows them worthy. And not only has Cochiee county redeemed herself, but she has in a measure redeemed ho good mime of the c.f the entire Territory. And to Judse Pinner. vis so fearlessly and justly .lis triing duties in tLis the thauk3 of tbe peo- e are d.ie. were filed in the district court today by Thomas Filch hi d T. J. We hope this is very true, both on ac count of 3Ir Tidball's personal credit here and elsewhere, and for the credit of the party to which he is supposed to adhere we mean the Republican party, for it is a ques tion here whether Mr. Tidball is not a Republican in Washington and a iJemocrat in Arizona, iroin tbe fact that he receives his appoint ment at ihe hands of the Republi-. can-aeiniinistration through the in fluence of Republican friends and Vc-trny6 their confidence ami fiiend ehip here by handing over the po efiions which he controlls to the Democratic party. Yesterday morning' John Heit'u w s sentenced to imprisonment for life for coais plieity in the Bisbeo marder. About ten minutes since his body was cut down from a telegraph pole at the e dge of town, and is n w at the morgue awaiting the coroner's in quest. Shortly before 8 o'clock about 100 men, principally mine rs f ii m the Contention and Grand Cen. Ual mines, wl,h h had b en shut clown, went to the Court house. Selecting- seven"of their number from Bisbee, tliey went to the door leading t- the jail and rapped for admit tance, the remainder of the crowd slaying outside. It was about the hour when breakfast is brought to the prisoners, and the j iiler, Billy Ward, thinking it was a man with food, opened the door without look ing to gee who his visitors were. Iustnntly be was covered with weap ons, and a de mand made f him for the keys of the jail. Seeing that resistance was usless he quielly gave (hem up, and a party' proofed -ed lo enter Heith's cell, unshackcled hi u, and brought him into the cor ridor of the jail. It was the first intention to hang him to the bannis ter cf the stairs leading to the sec ond story, but this plan was aban doned, and the crowel started for the telegraph line at the lower edge of town. At the door of the Court house they were met by Sheriff Ward, who, throwing up his hands, exclaimed with show of authority, 'Stop this I You have got to stop this right here!" Before he could realize what had happeneel he was picked up and ttirown down the s'eps, and the crowd proceeded with the prisoner down Tough nut street until reaching a certain place se lected fer the execution. The trip from tbe juil to the point mention ed was made on a run, Huith keep ing in the lead. Arriving at- the place Ileith pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, and said, "Boys, you are hanging an innocent man, and yon will find it out be fore those other men (referring to Dowd and his pals Eente-ccud to be hanged on the 28 h of March) are hung. Tie this handkerchief over mj- eyea. I am not af i aid to die. . I have one favor to ask, that you will not mu tilate my body by si ooting inte it ufter I am hung." His eyes were bandage d as desired, and in a mo ment his body was dangling at the end of a rope fiom the c-ros bar on the te k-gr;!,h p-le. Ileith through out s'loweci gi eut r.ervc, and had. it not been for the absolute certainty of his guilt his life would piobably have been spareel . THE C'Ori'ER QUEEN". Tombstone, Feb. 21.
