Samuel Esmond met with a .v
unfortunate accident Monday on e
excursion which resulted in the loss
of his life. He missed his footing on
the platform of the train and fell
crushing his skull. The funeral was
held yesterday. He had no family.
Louisville has sent two of her dis
tinguished divines to the city in the
person of E. P, Marrs, D. D. and C.C.
Bates, D. D. They will speak at Zion
aad Central Churches tomorrow, the
former filling Zion’s pulpit in the
morning and at Central in'lhe evening
and the other reversing the order.
Mrs. John X. Canada entertained
thirty ladies Monday afternoon at
cards in honor of Mesdames Childers
and Rolling of Topeka. Progressive
whist furnished ample entertainment.
The first prize a cut glass bonbon
dish being won by Miss Greenlee, the
second,a haul-painted di-h by Mrs.
Mae Lawrence and Mrs. H. Haskins
carried of the honor of the booby
piize.
Sunday at the People’s Sunday Al
liance there will be the following pro
gram: Instrumental solo, Mrs. May
Byrd; Recitation, Miss Geraldine

Prof Albert Ross has been louring
the state in the interest of Western
University, and was in the city the
early part of the week speaking at the
principal churches. Ho is trying to
increase the enrollment from this
slate. His school through the bene
ficence of the Kansas legislature is
enabled to offer exceptional facilities
for students. -$35,000 was appr priat
ed for maintenance an enlargement I
at the last session. Already a new
SIO,OOO trades hall is in process of
erection and an additional story and
a half being put upon the girl's dor
raitory. Experienced teachers from
Tuskegee, Wilberforce and Hampton
are on the staff aud a very competent
equipment added. The school year
which begins next Monday seems
destined to be the greatest in the his
tory of it with an unprecedented en
rollment, The growth of thisinsti
tuti in under the guidance of Prof. W.
T. Vernon is one of the marvels of

Audacity Won Captain.
In the (lay-i of frontier army posts
and Indian fighting a certain captain
was as famous for his courage as he
was notorious for his love of liquor.
One night he thought he heard a
burglar in his quarters, so, pistol In
band, he stepped across the hall to
the dining room door.
Sure enough, there stood an Intru
der at the sideboard, where the silver
ware was displayed.
“What are you doing there?” said
the captain, covering his man with
the gun.
"Getting a drink of whisky," (hr
burglar answered, calmly filling a
glass from one of the captain’s bottles
The fellow’s serene audacity ap
pealed to the brave captain.
"Say,” said he, lowering the pistol
“make It two."

Lugged the Load.
A bright looking girl of 20 or no,
evidently not In this country more
than a year or two, rode up from the
Polk street depot In a Dearborn street
horse car with a newly-landed Immi
grant, who, from facial resemblance,
seemed to bo her brother. The girl
lugged tbe youth's big valise Into the
car and bent under It again when they
got off at Adams street and disap
peared In the direction of the Union
depot, her companion lolling along at
ease by her side quite empty-handed
