The M-.doe hid'-ms, who occupy a
broken and rocky country which is al
most inaccessible near the line be
tween California and Oregon, have
lately proved troublesome, and extra
ordinary efforts have been made to ef
fect a treaty, and satisfy them, without
further bloodshed. They have expres
sed a willingness to confer with tlie
commissioners. April 11th three com
missioners, with Gen. Caiiby, went out
to meet a detachment of them, for the
purpose of arranging terms, when Men.
Caiiby and Kev Dr. Thomas, one of the
cominksioucrs were foully murdered,
Mcacham, another commissioner was
severely wounded while the third es
caped. The uknost indignation is felt by the
army, and also by President Grant,
and (icneral Sherman, and the Indians
will be made to suffer for the full
measure of their horrid crime. The
following order by Men. Sherman in
relation to the affair, gives most of the
important facts :

by the civ il agents of the government.
