the church were acatlered all along tbe

the faith which was in him, he denied
to no man the right of free thought and

point out the way but went that way
himself and asked others to go with
him, and his company was so pleasant
that it was hard to resist. There was

literally running over with kindness
and good will. It permeated the whole
community. His smiling face, kindly
voice and hearty grasp of tbe band
were an antidote fur grief, medicine for
tbe sick and solace for the dying. No
social gathering was quite complete
unless bis contagions laugh could be
beard, lie waa not more a minister
than be was a man, and yet very few
preachers could excel bim in the pul
pit or in the social meeting. His ser
mons always betrayed tbe scholar aud
the deep thinker, yet they seemed to
come from the heart rather than from
the head. There waa no strained at
tempt at eloquence, but his discourses
poesej no sedative qualities. The

A correapondent of the Brattleboro
llecord ssys thst Rev. F. W. Olmstead
has closed bis labors with the Congrega
tional church in Townthend, having fin
ished a pastorale of siven years. Mr.
Olmsted's stay in town bas been one
like the comuiju experiences of mankind
of mingled sorrow and gladness
While here, some of bis family Lava been
tick a large skaro of tho time, and he baa
been called upou to lay iu the silent dust
the loved companion of bis youth and
mother of bis children, nud a daughter,
whose virtues aud amiable qualities are
rarely equalled. Mr. Olmsted is known
throughout tho State an one of the strong
est and ablest in the denomination.
John F. SpofTord, of Ludlow, who
mysteriously disappeared from bis rci
deuco, Weducsday, was found towards
night of that day about a mile from bis
residence fitting on a wall, somo distance
from any dwelliug, in an insane state.
The steam taw mill, dwelliug houee
and baru, owned by John M. Saffjrd of
Cambridge, were burned Sunday morn
ing. Loss estimated at $3, OX). The
bouse was inaurcd for $800. The mill,

chinery, was not Insured.
Win. E. Hawks, of Bennington, took
two lront from tbe Walloomsao, last
week, aggregating 4 10-16 lbs.
A boy was receutly suspended from
the Ilraltleboro grammar school for tbe
reason that he was iu the habit of carry
ing a pistol.
Hon. Hiram Cole, aud other old resi
dents of Shaftsbury, recall the tact that
on (ho night of May loth, 1434, a heavy
snow storm fell, to the depth of eighteen
inches, which enabled farmers to freight
(o Troy by sleigh", ou the day followiug.
The apple trees were heavily freighted
with snow intermingled with beautiful
blossoms.
Solomou Montague, over whom the pa
pers are having so much to aay, was the
fourth child born iu Cambridge. At that
time Cambridge was iu Rutland comity:
Ix month after it was in Addison comi
ty; two years after it waa in Chittenden
county ; and from V)i to 1835 it belong
ed to Franklin county; since 183j it ha
been anchored in Lamoille. So Mr.
Montague baa lived in five counties, and
ttill all tbat lime bo baa lived iu one
town, aud twenty-two year of the lims
within 100 rod ol bis birth place.
