We wern aumewbat ar.tutiiFbt'4 and greatly pained to read u editorial iu tie Kulland yiro-'J tf July -lib iu 10 Kard to college education, from wlicb we give lie iollowing extract aa a fiir aperitneu of the ideaa therein advanced: ' We do tot fay that tlere might not be a college no conducted that a young man would Lo helped loth fur (pending four ycura wilbiri lit wu'Ih, but there is no college iu Vermont that ia worthy of any young man's tiino or attenliou wbo baa a real tlirt for any higher latitude of learning and culture than ia afforded him by an excellent common acbool. Tho vant majority of young men who go to college are in tended for practical callings: there arc pulpits aud professors' chairs for the tew; the time expended upon Latin and Greek is a wanto; tho istudy of pure uietapbyaics it a waste ; indeed tho whole courBO of our average college secuis to us to lo ingeniously crammed with tho mere lumber of learning; it is a culture built out of dates, names, aud all tho other dried fish of history. Something is done towards burdening tho memory ; not much toward .stim ulating the powers of thought and tho faculty of clear, simple expresnioii. Nine-tenths of our Vermont college boys can't bo trusted to write a eimplo newspaper paragraph with ordinary perspicuity and forct-; very many of them spell frightfully, and aro grossly ignorant of Knglish grammar. Most of them know next to nothing of Eng lish literature ; even of tho great names like Shakespeare, Uyron and Shelley, and they arc equally ignorant of Haw thorne, Emerson, Lowell and Web ster." No doubt tho editor of tho Herald could get up a college that would le an advantage to the human race, but wo aro sorry lo learn that tho members of tho corporations, presidents and professors of our colleges and especial ly of our Vermont colleges, brilliant aud highly educated men though most of them arc, have sigually failed in their efforts. Wo do not claim that a college course, or any other course will ruako a bright man out of an idiot, or tha1 tho advantages of such a course arc always improved as they should lo, but wo do claim that a goad thorough course is an advantage to a man iu any profession or calling in life. Wo are entirely willing to compare results, tak ing success in life as a test. For in stance, tako a thousand consecutive graduates of Middlebury college and compare them with one thousand con secutive graduates from tho "common school" or any other school or college. Tbey may uot be able lo spell correctly and may possibly n,ike as bad work of the English language as does the Her ald man, but the fact remains that they have been pretty generally successful. Very many of them have become emi nent and few have proved failures. Itlll.l HUlillRKV A tAIMlltl--. UK TIIK riOllllKKM.
