market tbat possess so many desirable
qualities as good wood ashes; being hub
in potash, and baring a fair proportion of
phosphorin aotd, tbey supply two impor
tant materials tbat ara delcient, but im
portant for plant growth. Wood ashes
contain large quantities of lime; not stone
lime but lime tbat is finer and mora solu
ble; It having once been io a condition to
enter planta, it again readily coma into a
condition to be taken up by growing
plants, much more so than the common
stone lime. Ashes contain two other im
portant elements, namely, magnesia and
silics; these sre both necesssry for plant
growth, and like tbe lime tbey are in the
right condition to be readily taken np by
growing plants. In fact wood ashes be
ing tbe mineral elements of vegetation,
tbey contain all of tba mineral element
for tbe growth of other vegetation and
tbat, too, in the best possible condition,
because having once been taken up by
growing vegetation, tbey bsve been divi
ded into small particles and made soluble
in water, and they readily return to tbe
ume oondition sgsin. This is an impor
tant fact tbat is generally overlooked. A
fertizer might be well supplied with im
portant element! of plsnt food, yet ba in
such condition ss to ba of no possible nse
(0 lbs growing plant for several years after
it is applied.
If tbe farmer could be sure of getting
good pare wood ashes at tbe price usually
charged, it would ba for his interest to
buy them for almost any crop he grows
onhisisrm, Wbile tbe benefit for tbe
firat year may not be as mush a some
other fertilizers, tbe second, and for four
or five following yesrs tbe benefit on many
aoila ara great. Tba doubt about tne
quality has deferred many from bnying
ashes in large qusntitiee. While there
ire lomo asbes analyzed worth
from 85 to 40 cents a .bushel, there are
others tbit will not analyze worth more

sible. A few years ago I visited tba farm of a
Mr. Gardner ia Vermont, wbo had. made
an average yield ef butter from bia dairy
af nearly 400 pound, and tba next year,
by aome change in bi owi, turning off
one or two and seme of tba other being
older, be expected to reach tba full 400
