Ste venson, at tbe depot on Bellville Street, aud titkeu on a tliort excursion to tbe termiuus of tbe truck. It was a pleasing event, to be remembered by tbe participants, and record ed in tbe history of the enterprise as tbe first passenger train over the road from Nashville. It was a ratification of tbe work ot the direc tory. Every one seemed proud of tbe occa sion, lookiug to it as tbe opening, in ctlect, of jntei course with tbe great West, which is destined to be of the first importance to our g: owing city. Thefptcial train, which left ILa depot at 5.-30 P. M., by a mistake cf the officer in charge of t'-e stoking departa.i-ot, bud only oue passenger car ; it consl.-ted of the loco motive, Gtn R' btrUfin, and lender, and a pas senger car of most comfortable ton-triiction for ihis watm weather, beiug so constructed tbat there was u hee circulation cf air lor tbe excursionists. A god look-out having been placr-d. rep resented in the person ot Mr. W. J. Hickett, than wliotu no one is more careful or polite, the worthy chief enit'eer, JJr. E. F. Fai.co. NET, took charge of the locomotive, and drove the train at a 20-milt.' rate, tliciiing from the purty ex'nilerated iemarks of applause. All concurred in the belief that the road was fir.-t-clas!, so smoothly did the train glide over the well-laid trrtck. The road-bed is covered six inches with Macadamized stone, upon which the track is laid. It is theinten tention of the Railroad Company to fill the interstices of the cross ties with gravel from Harpetb river, which will make the running of the cars nearly noiseless aud very comfort able. ' Upon ths arrival of our reporter at the statiou on Bellville Street, he found a de tachment of tbe City Council, under tbe lead of our Mat or, and the Chairmen ot the Boa; da of Council and Aldermen respective ly, the affable high-Sheriff of the county, the venerable city treasurer, and tax-collector, besides the genial City K corder, and many citizens invited along with the press to join in the pleasures ot the occasion. Tbe whistle gave one long expiration, and we rolled away into Ihe cool shade oi the for-st. now and then Sitting by the flourishing fields of ripening grain, and the open doors ai.d windows of the new settlements arising along tbe route. From tbe curiosity aud excite ment betrayed in the look of the dwellers of the little settlement called Clifton, which we passed, we cuuclude they were much pleased at our appearance, but we assure them they were not more so than we were we speak for the party with them. The excursionists amused themselves with the beautiful land scape of hill and dale, and the luxurious crops that fringed tbe scene. The clear sky and tbe cool air lent additional pleasure to the pauorama. Meanwhile the Committee of Arrange ments, which consisted ot the redoutable Y. S. P., ami bis colored atlacht, with only half a name Demi, as we beard it were boldiug an informal meeting, which excited the curi osity of this reporter much. , But our whistle souuded, aud tbe party were uotified tbat we were at Bosley's Spring, where all got off and preceded by the aioresaid attache, Demi to whom, by this time, some one near ihia re porter bad affix td the name Joux soon col lec'td around tbe spring. Here, all honor to our mother Nature, freely and plenteously flawed tbe healthful water, which our party enjoyed much, from the frequent and repeated draughts. Let our old friend Mr. Boslet bboalii ba troubled with others, induced by our praise of bia spring, to vl-it it, we feel it dae to say tbat our parly took along with tin in a liule something which they poured into their glasses to prevent any Ii.jury thai might aii trout a change of water. As our city autlities are likely to procure steam fire eugiues in a short time, we beg leave to call their attention to the description of one in the List number of the Scientific American, manu factured for a company ia St. Petersburg. Rus.-ia, by M.srs. Eitexcek &, Edmo.vd, of Richmond, Va. It is a more elegant machine iu shape than those iu use iu Baltimore and Cincinnati, and weighs 6 503 pouuds. It has two pumps of 3k inches iu diameter, equal in area to a 5-iucii diameter pump, and will throw a lj-inch stream 250 ftrct. . . A ood deal has beeu said against these machines by people who ueversaw one, neith er idle nor at work, and can know nothing about them. Oae of them will accomplish more towards extinguishing a fire than half a dozen band engines, no matter bow efficiently they may lie woiketl, and in a few j-ears no other kind will be used in a city of any pre tensions whatever. Nashville must have them at uo distant day, and she had as well have them now as ever. CoPrtrt ix Texxessee.
