While the city fathers are engaged In
revising the ordinances, we beg to sug
geit to them the importnace of providing
for the organiiation and equipment of at
least two fire . companies. As our city
now elands, we are at the nieroy of tho fire
fiend whenever he may feel disposed to
praotice his devouring profession in ou
midst. The blue bucket fire brigade of
our fathers is entirely too slow for the
demands of modern times, aud we true1
that a committee of active, praotioal men
will be appointed to take this matter into
oousideraliou, and that they will digest
some plan whereby we may be protected
against the ravages of fire, which may oo-
our at any 'moment. At a cost of about
$16,000 a sufficient number of fire cis
terns could be constructed and two steam
engines with necessary hose oould be pur
chased. We would suggest that two H. C:
Silsby's eco on d class rotary engines be or
dered at as early day as practical, and
that the young men of our elly'organite
at onoo, two companies of volunteer fire
men to take charge of them. It is real
jolly fun to " run with the machine " and
we know that our aolive, energetio and
enterprising young gentlemen, will as
sume all the duties and labors neocssary
to keep the morals and efficiency of the de
partment in tip top order.
