The Virginia Memorial . Fund has a

'-'-The Methodists of Tennessee have de
termined to raise $1,000,000 lo found a
University, the location of which will
probably be the city of Nashville. Com
modore Vanderbilt, whose wife is a Meth

of $600,000 as a beginning. Tho remain

The Watchman and Itefleotor states that

Clenvral Gordan,
The Atlanta Suit of April 1, oentains
the following editorial by Alex. II. Ste
phens on Vice-President Wilson's eompli.
ment to General Gordon: . , (
KX-CONVSDKHATK LKADKR8.
The courteous compliment paid Oen.
Gordon by Vioe President Wilson the oth
er day In calling this distinguished ex
Confederate Chief lo preside over the Sen
ate, is entensively noted and variously
commented on by the press in all parts of
the'ooiintry.f The impression seems to be
entertained by many that this is Ihe first
honor of , tho kiud bestowed upon ex-Con
federates In Congress.
This is a mistake, if our memory be not
at fault. It is hut a repetition in the
Senate of the like honor conferred on Gen.
Dullose by Mr. Speaker Maine, soon after
this gallant ex-Confederate officer took
his seat in the House as tho Kepresenta
live of the Eighth distriot in Georgia. .
The moral of all suchooinplimenls should
be to cause all ex-Cenfederatea, of every
grAde and class, to cling closer to the glo
rious principles of self-government, for
which thVy contended in the day of fra
tricidal strife, ond, which principles lie at
the foundation of nil our free institutions.
These courtesies are but indications of
those higher honore which axe in store for
ex-Confoderalesiu days to oome who shall
prove true te themselves and leUfastJy
adhere to the' vital principles of all
Amerioan constitutional liberty.
With pat ienoe, virtue, intelligence and
patriotism on the part of . the Seuthern
people, the day is not distant when .their
"leaders" in tha Inte "rebellion, ! so called
in the language of Andy Johnson, will no
longer be "branded'.' with the dishenorlog
name of "traitors," but denoted in history
in the rank of self-sacrificing patriots,
"consecrated to Ihe admiration of the
world; and placed by, the side of Washing
ton, Hampden awl (Sydney." : ,,i . ,
It was, indeed, a proud day for General
Gordon, and a proud day for Georgia, and
a proud day for ' all the Southern Stales,
whoa the deader" in tha Inat hnnalnaa
charge iu behalf of their cause in the fluid
was (instead or being "branded as a "trai
tor") called npon to preside over the em
bassadors ef all ihe States in Senate as
sembled.
