Mr. lni ('. Mlteliell, Hallns, Texns:
Dear Sir Doubtless file report of tlic
prevalence of yellow fever hero has
reached your clly ere this, I would
say that there lias not been a case lien
tills year. We have, however, bad
and tire still having the usual full
fevers which are hero every year, such
as Intermittent and remittent levers,
which is attended with more or less
congestion. Smile of our citizens (I
am sorry to say) have been frightened
from I licit- homes by the report that
lias been circulated concerning tin
type of sickness; here.
' 1 have Interviewed several physi
cians practicing here, and all say lite
report Is groundless. Alsitlt the only
deaths Unit have occurred here lately
are those mt'ir who ' have been em
ployed on Ilic rivet- above here re
moving the raft; working thcic all
summer in (he sun; drinking Med
Kiver water; exposed to J lie inllueucc
of malaria (that Is always present In
such places at this season of the year):
take sick up there, and are discharged
and come to Shreveport to obtain med
ical aid. Many limes they arc on the
way two or three days; some having
lo walk. Tho valuable time for medi
cation is being lost, and often when
they reach here "arc too far
gone" (to use the expression)
for medicine lo have any, or
but little ell'ect. This ('(institutes the
cause of the great seam I have refer
ence to. Kvory city or community
have in il a classof "Wings" who have
no other motive in view but to get up
such reports having nothing at stake
to sutler by the result conseiUent of
such a rumor alloat, and not possessing
brain enough to see the lolly of such
an action.
There has been but few deaths in the
Hospital this month In all, but six.
Those wlio have entered have been af
fected with intermittent bilious fever,
is about all the sickness we have here.
This is a critical period in I he com
merce of .Shreveport, having lust been
connected with Dallas and oilier cities
of Texas by rail, and the merchants of
those place's have not yet fairly tried t lie
place as a market, for their cotton and
the purchase of their supplies, and
should this roiHirt be believed, It will
lien great Injustice to our merchants
here. The paper here are doing all
that can be done to dispel llm foolish
and unjust report; and no doubt you
will have u much better demons! ration
of its falsity in a day or two from the
doctors here. So come on to Shrcve
tiort and tell all uthers to do likewise.

The I'liclllc train was stopped last
night by direction of the authorities of
this city at Mcstiuito Station, a point
on the road four miles from Dallas.
Whether this precaution turns out to
bo too long for Yellow Jack to get over,
or whether it is just long enough for a
nice pleasant walk for him inlo the
city, is a question to ho decided shortly.
THK LATLST.
From gentlemen who arrived from
Jctlcrson lost night wo learn tliat Jef
ferson, Marshal and Longviow have
established a rigid iputrantiue. Thpy
iuform us that there is no doubt
that yellow fever, In its most virulent
form, exists In Shreveport, but attrib
ute it to local causes, and think our
citizens need entertain no apprehen
sion in regard to its appearance in our
-'ity.
Ul' Pacific avenue, the other night, a
man Vent home drunk and pulling off
his boots and removing ills hat laid
them with his cane on the stops ami
started down town again; About two
hours afterwards he returned and
found ills wife standing 011 those steps,
with his hoots and hat on and his
nine raised with blood-curdling and
disenchanting grace am) ni) intonation
poetical with j.r ivity, pressing him to
stop Into the house. He ateppod in,
but as he passed over tho threshold
there was a fooling union between his
back and that oano, so much so that
the neighbors sent over to inquire if
anything had "busted" in Smith's
house.
Thk first rlieof the season took place
lu a small new frame house near Mu
st root car ticket office yesterday. About
noon n lighted cigar was laid on a pile
of uhavlngs, under the Impression, we
suppose, that they were chips of stone.
