The ravnginof tills disease In Slirevu port, McrophlH, Calvert, ami more re cently lu Marxtiall and ColmriliUH, Testis, Lave bevn severe beyond any previous visitations for many years, exceptlug perhaps 1807. That Oalves ton and Houston should have entirely escaped Is oue of those, coincidences as unexpected as gratifying. We, of Dallas, have great cutiso of gratulatioii and thankfulness. That several cases were imported hero und died in our hotel lu the most densely populuted part of the town, and In the least elevated part too, we lu'lieve is a conceded fact We accept it as true, but there are some, however, who dif fer with this view. With mich facts, what is the deduc tion to be drawn ? We are disponed to say that our elevation above the sea level, in a country so roiling, open to pure and invigorating breezes, and with no lakes or marshes near enough to breed pestilence, these have served to shield us. The disease has spread in no locality so elevated during the year, or heretofore in this country. And, if with thousands of new-comers among us, with scores of deep foundations be ing excavated, with the digging down of hills and filling up of ravines, with great numbers of peoplo in tents and shanties, with daily intercourse by rail or clandestinely with Infected places, if, with all these aiding causes for disease, wo have escaped eutlrcly a truth about which thero can bo no question then, in no spirit of boost, but utter thankfulness, may we not s sumo that hereafter we shall be more surely exempt. Let our whole popula tion become the inmates of comfort able homes, let our drainage, grading, filling up, etc., as now going on reach, reasonable perfection, supplemented with an extended use of pure cistern water, and wo feel tho utmost con fidence in predicting that Dallas is des tined speedily to rank as the healthiest large town in Texas or the entire south west. Every year, month and week, im provements are being pressed forward to add to the salubrity and healthful ness of Dallas and its vicinity. The CaokM. Brooklyn Argus. On a bitter old winter afternoon a gentleman spent three hours on the Cuuard wharf, in Jersey City, waiting the debarkation of his family, who were pawengen on a steamer then anchored in the stream. The regula tion of the Cunard steamers la to laud all passengers andlugoge by lighters In Jersey City. But cm this particular steamer there were also as pasnengera one Henry D. Cooke and family. Mr. Cooke was the president of a national bank in Washington hia brother was Jay Cooke, President Grants banker, and hia partner was Boos Hhepher. Of course such a distinguished gen tleman and his family could not go to Jersey City on a cold day. Tho royal party had been signaled by telegraph a Government tug and officials were on hand. Oue hundred and two trunks were carefully lifted over everything else, the trunks and their owners Mr. Henry D. Cooke and party placed In the tug, which tug lauded directly in New York. Whether the one hun dred trunks were examined by the Cus tomhouse officers or not we do not know. All these three long cold hours over one hundred other passengers were shivering In the cold, and not al Inwed toatir from the ship.
