THE DALLAS HERALD, SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 5, TlSSl FINANCIAL. There is a sum of money, variously atatnt fromJS,000l000to$n,500,()U) in gold, lying In the bunk of Knglund deposited thoro during the rebellion by the confederate au thorities. When the war ended and the confederate government ceased to exist, there was no one authorized to draw this money, und it ban remained there tin (claimed to tiiia time. It ii now asserted that Mr. Jcfl'erson Davis and Honorable Jacob Thompson, in convention with Air. Juduh 1'. Benjamin, have united in an at tempt to have this money applied to the re demption of the confederate bonds issued from lMtil to lfdtt Inclusive, to be distributed per rata on all the bonds registered at a committee room No. oU Coleman streot, London. Thoro were ubont 700,WO,WO of these bonds issued during the ! war, but the amount between tho dates named would probably not aggregate more than $42.",000,UOO. Of these bonds it is thought that nearly one-half have been lost or destroyed, which would leave an amount not above $.'JU (XW.000. and perhaps not more than half of this amount will be bought up and registered. The a mount in the bank will probablv pay twenty per cent, of all the bonds collected, and il inter est is allowed on the deposits twice that amount may bo realized. This seems to bo the true status of the Confeder ate bond matter, which Is at present puz zling tho brains of the financiers o this country. Bhould tbero be mora of these bonds in existence than is now estimated the pro rata will of course bo lessened. The Confederate government it seems kept no reliable record of the bonds issued, or if they did so these records are not to he found, and while the amount cunnnt be less than above stated it may bo a grout deal more. The domand for these bonds will not prob ably continue for any greut length of timo, for whatever is done by tho parlies now lmvinir tho matter in hand will bo accomplished at an early day, and should tho money bo disbursed to thoso having bonds registered the value of all tho remaining bonds will forever cease. Tho committee who have tho matter in hand in London chargeVmo'shilling for reg istering every.; $,rjMi, ami the feo must ac company the bonds, in New Orleans these bonds uro o noted on tho exchunge and have sold as high as $7 per. $1,000, but in other markets of tho coun try their vuluo is much less, i'uvls, ilenjamin and Thompson, all bavini; held high positions in tho Confederacy, it is thought they will succeed in recovering the money for the purposes set forth above. These are tho facts so fur as we can gather them from tho most reliable- sources. In this city some eighty to one hundred thou sand dollars worth of these bonds have buun purchased. The quarterly reports of exports to tho United .States for the period ending Septem ber 80, show a falling oil' of Jfl.tioo'as com pared with the corresponding period last year. Last year there wero I,.1fU persons in Bos ton who paid tuxes on over $1,0(K),0U0 worth of property, und of thoso V were women. From this it will be seen that about 15 per cent, of the taxpayers of lloston who pay on over $1,000,(101) aro women, and it is esti mated that tbero arc altogether 3,000 female taxpayers at tho hub. In twenty years past Pennsylvania has reduced her state debt over $l!i,000,0ii0. It is a good picture for some of the repudia tors to look at.
