FINANCIAL.
There is very little mutilated coin
circulating in Texas, but as it is
source of gain to many persona in
the north ami east to punch and clip coins
and sell the clippings, the hanks and mer
chants tire refusing to tuke tliein unless at
their actual value by weight. The mutila
tion of coin is not confined to silver, hut
gold coins aro despoiled of their value in
the came manner. There is no provision
for the redemption of mutilated silver coin,
and as it is not a legal tender, and has a
value ns bullion only, hankers and others
are justified in refusing to redeem it.
Mutilated gold coin is a legal tender at a
valuation in proportion to its actual weight,
according to section XS5 Uevised Statutes.
It will probably not be long before these
mutilated coins will bo introduced here in
Texas, and it will be well for our business
men to refuse, them at the start, which
limy prevent nny large amount satins
into general circulation here.

which was recently issuvd, gives the statis
tics of the production of gold and silver in

than mare estimates, so accurate
and carefully have they been
obtained. They show that the

Da mas, November 11. Tho establish
ment of a commercial exchanco in this ell v
is a want that has long been felt, and one
that should beostponed no longer thun it
is practicable to put it into active operation.
The business houses of Dallas now extend
from the Trinity river almost to thofuir
grounds, and for several blocks north and
south of Kim street, and business require
ments demand that there should be an ex
change where business men can meet
and buy and sell such products as
are offered in the market without expend
ing the better part of the business hours

would soon beconio a great mart where
manufacturers, railroad men, and dealers
in grain, country produce, and in fact nil
business men, whether in the retail or
wholesale trade, would meet and transact
business in an hour or two which now re

to ull that it would be superlluous to
discuss them. We now have a
Hoard of Trade which has been of
service 10 our city, nut wo want an ex
change where all our business men will eon
gregato daily, and where matters ot mo
tnent to our city may he discussed and act
ed upon, and where concert of action and
harmony may always bo obtained. The
room new occupied by tho Hoard of Trade
would answer the pnrposo of an exchange
until a better and larger one could bo pro
cured. On application no doubt a sub
otllce of the telegraph would be opened in
the room for the convenience of business
and many other useful and attractivo feat
ures would be added, as they suggest
Ihemselvos to the minds of the members.
It is understood that this matter has boon
brought to the notice or the directors of the
Hoard of Trade, but they luive notshown
the usual enterprise in Its establishment
that characterises thorn generally, and tlmy
luivo delayed taking action until now the
business men of the city begin
to murmur at their course.

lished to advance every material interest of
Dallas that might be suggested or lnaiigu.

beets but reduced the value of those gath
ered. From the advance sheets of Colonel Max
well's report, prepared for the Merchants'
Kxchange of Cincinnati, we learn that the
production of malt liquors has been greater
tho past year than ever before. There were
produced in Cincinnati 67i;,Siil barrels and
in Covington and NewpoJt fiS,4S0 burrels, or
an aggregate of 7:Ji,:ilt barrels, or K.fUd,
S71 gallons, The amount or malt consumed
was l,m7,osl bushels, and of boos, l,4i:i,o.sfl
pounds. They havo been a lit tle short on
water dow n ut Cincinnati tho past year,
but. with a supply of beer of over ninety
gallons to every man, woman and child, the
l'aris of America has not necessarily been
"dry."
The trade of Moron, Georgia, in mor
phine alone is worth $Hl,iK)fl a year that is,
morphine and opium together. A promi
nent dealer says that few people have any
idea of the number of morphine and opium
eaters there are in that city und tho sur
rounding country.
The total receipts of cod and halibut r.t
Ciloiicesier, Massachusetts, during the
month or October, were 3,Ot!7,470 pounds;

pounds.
A strong movement is on font at Huston

of the temptations ami all the attractions

The dried fruit crop In the Knoxville sec
tion of Tennessee, will be four hundred ears.

In the laid few days we bore received a
number of orders for the Daily Ilmui.n
from merchants around Dallas," many of
them coming from east Texas, because of
tho correctness ami impartiality of our
market reports, anil particularly for the
cotton quotations. We tiro gratified that
our etl'orts to quote the market correctly
are being appreciated. Dallas now being
the center of trade for such a largu district
of country, merchants and cotton huvcrs
around us everywhere look to tho Jlnnii.n
lor reliable reports, and are controlled m
their purchases by them. Our earnest en
deavor will be to give facts and figures that
will not mislead uny one.
Tho receipts ot cotton to-day were
so small that wo did not attempt
to get the number of bales that
arrived by rail. There were no receipts by
wugoi.s, the roads being in such a condition
that if would be almost an impossibility to
come to the citv with loaded teams. The
market, however, advanced an eighth of a
cent ami was very firm.

but there was little demand. Wheat has
declined a few cents, and Nicaragua wheat
fell to do cents, as the demand for it here was
for seed iilone. Corn and oats maintained the
same figures of yesterday's quotations.

higher than yesterday. December corn
