We record this morning the execution
of eight condemned Nihilists in the cit
adel of St. Petersburg. Six of them
were officers in tho army or navy. The
other two were women. They woro put
lo doath in tho presence of tho prison
oliieials, thu minister of the interior,
and tho minister of justice. The public
know neither the day nor the hour of
the event. Hut the circumstances of
this secret execution, urim ami weird us
they aro, sink into insiiruilieaiii-ii w hen
com lull ed w ith the trial which preceded
it. IJnglisli niuiderers are banned in
private, though tho act is hero preceded
by a public) notice, and followed bv a
coroners inijuest. The criminals, as" wo
will assume them to have boon, wero
tried as privately as they were put to
death. Jlardly any ono was admitted
into tho court except the judges, the
advocates, thu witnesses and u minister
ol slate. There was no jury. The chief
of tho St. Petersburg high court of jus
tice presided, but the tribunal was. a
couil-martial. Fourteen persons wero
convicted and sentenced to doath. Tho
ompe.-or, however, has commuted the
sentence upon six of them. The charge
against all was that they boloiinod to tho
terrorist party of tho will of the people.

that under such a system there can bo
no security for tho ailmini-.traiion of
justice, or even for the observance of

tlio. way on the evidence of one perjured
informer, or without any eviilon'co at
all. Wedo not say it wits so in this
case. These prisoners may iiuvo boon
found guilty on testimony which would
havo satisfied any jury. Where is the
guariinlee? The judges answer for the
guillof Ihelr victims; who will answer
for the judges? No llussian newspaper
dare protest. Indeed there aro very lew
llussian newspapers left. The object of
Count Tolstoi's administration' is of
course to intimidate the members of a
formidable! and widespread conspiracy,
l'.ut a general (error which all'ei'ls the
innocent does not deter the real culprits.
The Nihilists aro indeed a source of
deadly peril, especially when there is
nothini: in tho shape oi' liberal or repre
sentative instilutions lietweeii them and

without shocking the feelings of civil
