Nitro glycerine by itself is not safe t handle, hence dynamite is preferred. U is ex tensively made and consumed in the United estates, under the various names ofUiaut Hercules, Jupiter ami Atlas powders, all of which contain anywhere irom :iu to NO per cent, of uitro-glycer-ine, the balance of the couijiouiid being made up of rotten stone, non-explosive earth, sawdust, charcoal, plaster of Patis, black powdor.or some other sub stance that takes up the glvcerino aud makes a porous, spongy mass. Nitro-glyeciine was discovered by Sal voro, an Italian chemist, in lK-li.
