These certificates are only bo much
waste paper if there is no land on which
thoy cau be placed. The state still has
an abundance of land and to apare
for them, and why not let tnem
have it? The United States has given
lavishly, and I must say it was but Jus
tice to do ho. in the way of pensions to
all disabled soldiers and officers who
served in the union army during tho
late unpleasantuesa, but the crippled,
poor and infirm exconfedorate soldier
naa no generous general government to
look to for aid in his declining days.
If hisstate.for which lie sauri lined every
thing, endured the privations of war,
periled his life amidst tho smoke and
carnage of battle, and suffered the tor
tures ol wounds and sickness in the
hospitals, bereft himself of every com
fort, and with tattered garments and
empty mess chest aud haver sack, faced
the blasts of winter, labored on the
march in mud ami freezing water
through dreary days, and lay him down
on the bare and r.hiliimr earth through
cheerloss nights, hoping on, rightingl'or
the cause ot his htate if his state forgets
him in his penury and his

What Dynamite I and How It is Made.
With Other I'olntt About the Kiplu
alve. Few people know what dyuamito is,
though the word is in common use. It
is a giant gun-powder; that is, an ex
plosive material varying in strength
and safojy of handling according to the
percentage of nitro-glvcerine it con
tains. Mitro-giyceiine, whence it derives
its strength, is composed of ordinary
glycerine and u.iric acid- compounded
tojjRlh : in Pertain proportions and at a
certain tomperatuie. Nitro-glyoorino,
though not the strongest explosive
Known, being exceeded in power by ni
trogen and other products of chemistry,
iiHuin mi Liia iiiuhi lernoie explosive
manufactured to any extent. Nitro
glycerine by itself is not safe t handle,
hence dynamite is preferred. U is ex
tensively made and consumed in the
United estates, under the various names
ofUiaut Hercules, Jupiter ami Atlas
powders, all of which contain anywhere
irom :iu to NO per cent, of uitro-glycer-ine,
the balance of the couijiouiid being
made up of rotten stone, non-explosive
earth, sawdust, charcoal, plaster of
Patis, black powdor.or some other sub
stance that takes up the glvcerino aud
makes a porous, spongy mass.
Nitro-glyeciine was discovered by Sal
voro, an Italian chemist, in lK-li. Dy
namite Is prepared by simply kuoading
with tho uaked hands, 2." per cent, ol
inlusorial earth, and 7ii oer cm.

one part and sulphuric acid two purls, to
which is added ordinary glycerine, and
the mixture is well washed with pure
water. The i:iusioii is composed of
small, microscopic, Mliciotis shells,
which have li st their liv.ng creatures.
