In last week's Independent the Mercha TRADE WEEK CAMPAIGN, in which many valuable prizes including an automobUe and many were featured as an inducement to buying for cash and the paying up of accounts already contracted. Sinular campaigns had been featured in many other towns in North Carolina, and those interested had, reason to believe that such a campaign was a good thing Tor our community and certainly well within die law. However, we were notified Saturday morning, January22nil, by our Solicitor, or District Attorney, that our campaign, while a good thing for our entire community and a proposition that could work no hardship on anyone, was illegal, as it was a violation of the Lottery Law, and as such would make our Association subject to indictment. - x ; Therefore, we, the Merchants' Association of Elizabeth City, although having already gone to consider able expense in advertising, withdraw our offers as made in our Pay-up and Trade . Vieek adv $ sincerely hope that the public will understand that we made our original offer in good faith and that only out of respect of the law and the fact that our membership is made up of men who always stand for the betterment of our community and the upholding of its law's is responsible for our abandoning this plan and the with drawing of our Pay-up and Trade Week prizes. The Elizabeth City Ministerial Asso ciationhas undertaken a study of the moving pictures shown in Elizabeth City and will presently have a mass of in formation on the subject. The minis ters, like other critics of the movies, have been inclined to denounce the mo vies iu general terms without having exact information upon which to ground their criticisms. The ministers are going to find much that is objectionable in the pictures shown, in Elizabeth City and their find ings may be of value to the public, even tho there may not be an immediate im provement in the pictures as a result of their investigation. If you see you pastor -at the movies these nights, you may know that he is there taking notes The idea of a local censorship of the movies seems to have been abandoned, the indvisability of such a censorship having been generally admitted. The idea of censorship doesn't set very well with the American people anyway. David Wark Griffith, the greatest screen producer of the screen age has pre sented the ease againnsC cetisorshjp. He has said: "Censorship is an -American because it is founded on the principle of .auto icsacy the udght -of a few to 4aeet thei tnassv Every American -precept is in or position to it. Every time America has shed blood it has been to overthrow tyranny, and Americans will - not countenance- tyranny of thought any more than they will countenance tyranny of physical power. c j "Censorship- im dangerous because ft is the beginning of the encroachment up on the freedom, of the press. As well permit an sippointee of a city council to sit at th desk of a newspaper editor and delete Che copy not to his liking. CensorsMp. is misguided. It defeats its purpose by robbing the screen of its virility, thus inviting the need of fur ther censorship over the spineless milk and water product that will follow it. "Cenjtorsbip is senseless because it puts into the hands of small-calibered politicians the right to edit our supply of thought and our means of recreation. As well permit these politicians to go into our. libraries and re-write Shakespeare or the Bible. 'Censorship is unjust because it re stricts barriers as numerous a our States and cities. It is an unwarranted tax upon an industry, and the maze of hazards it erects discourages the spirit of adventure and originality without which the industry cannot exist. It is an assurance of screen mediocrity. '"Censorship is untruth because it conceals truth. No. film can be great tht does not mirror life, and life, is made up of joy and sorrow, sweetness ami bitterness, lights and shadows, good and evil, comedy and tragedy. "Censorship is artless, because it would rob our films of the very qualities that make Shakespeare's works immor tal, the contrast of vice and virtue. an essentiial law of drama. Censorship is unlawful, because the screen is a form of expression and the right of free expression is guaranteed under the Constitution. "Censorship is needless, because the exposure of an indecent or immoral film is a misdemeanor under all laws which how exist and comes under . the police regulation of every community." EHRINGHAUS IS POPULAR IN DARE FOR CONGRESS Dare Wants a Congressman Front Near, by and,is Hoping He Will B It Recent references to this state being entitled to two additional members of Congress because of the state's being: re districted has aroused considerable- in terest in Dare county as well as the rest of the state. Dare seems considerably more interested because of a rumor that these two members will be elected from the state at large, believing along: with the rest of Northeastern North Caro ina that this section is due another mem ber because of its size, and boosts: So licitor J. C. B. . Ehringhaus of this city as a likely pro sect. The Solicitor is well known in Dare where he has. a strong personal following, -among . which Kodak ft rums Developed Free when purchased of us and prints are ordered. 168 s G ALESKI0i,ltean 209 GRANBY STREET (Opposite Monticello Hotal) Kodak Headquarters are R. Bruce Etheridge, B. G. Crisp and many other leading Democrats of the county. There is much discussion in Dare concerning the Solicitor as a pros pect for Congress and Attorney Crisp recently wrote the News & Observer a letter concerning this, in which he said: "If we are to have two congressmen at large, none more worthy can be found for one than Hon. J.C B. Ehringhaus, the present very efficient Solicitor of the First Judicial District. He has served as a member of the state legis lature and as State Solicitor most ac ceptably. He has the confidence of the people fully, and is in all respects .se cond to none for the position. It is true this would give the First Congressional District two -members of that body, but this is a very large district and both its sitting member and a member elect are from Washington, (N. d) which is remote from the extreme Northeastern counties in this district." in , Zrf -t HERTS L9ZERS Er TRADE MARK I f , Dig Cobblers For The Early Market SWIFT'S HUMMER - 7-6' Specially made to produce a big yield and early maturity.
