There seems to be no reasoonable doubt that these jetties will afford a continu ous depth of 25 feet of water through the .Swth Pass by March next, and as ooon as 22 feet is assured many new lines of stonmrrs and aliling ve suol will be drawn tb New Or. leans. A wealthy and enterprising firn of Liverpool are going to put on a large line of steamers, each with a capacity for 150,000 bushes of grain. Large elevators have al ready been built at New Orleans in antilipa tion of the flow of grain through that out let, and St. Lunis has been for years organizing lines ot barges tor the large down-river garin trade which is expected to follow the deepening of the channel of the South Paes. There can be no lnt stion that the opennag of the months of thu Mississippi to ocean asipping wilt give a mighty im pulse to the development of the rivertrilio along its whole length from New Orleans to St. Paul, and that the Mississippi will there apon be the che apest ontltt for the grain and all the products of the gro.st valley to toe smeboard. The cost of transPtortirng what by barge from Minnesota to New tOrlenns will probably not exceed 25 ccnts, and it is doubt irl whe her the eastward rndl and water lines can compete with the downward current of the Miasissippi in tue movement of grain to the ocean. The flow of grain for export to Europe once estiblished in this dirtc, tou the reflex tide of f.reign importations wi l naturally and necessarily seek the tame channel to a great extent. The ocean shipping ongaged in the grain and cot. ton trade will give low freights for re urn car goes of merchandise, and the same principle will rule the freight rate of the upward-bound e<aft from New Or eans. Of course to give Minnesota the full benefit of this great com peting outlet to the ocean it is necessary that the work of deepening the channel of the river in its shallow places, by the application of the jetty system whenever necessary, should be proseeuted along its entire navigable length. One sr two hoiedred thousand dollare thus uxpeatded would give a channel Ave feet Ia ept atel boest water from e santti Nov Ian 3MW Mm 0»1t" .1O.. .L .
