Qlaitber, Jewis Texada, TlE SI AZTORIAL QUESTIOr . l Slong pending struggle for the anent establishment of the legal ment of Louisiana having reached I le and just conclusion, and a aG&reform legislation, which will I. most appreciable relief to the ed taxpayers of the State, t been enacted by our Legislature, i remaains but one important duty ha body to perform, and that is to to the election of a United Senator for the term ending e 4, 1883. the spring of 1861 the State of I ana has been without a true rep tative of its people and material t ts in the highest council cham ;i the nation. Men like Kellogg a 4 West, conspicuous representatives ihe odious carpet-bag refime, have i their brief hours upon the stage i -Washington., and being identified in I -public mind with the State which c y impudently cladmed to represent, I -e brought upon Louisiana a disgrace stain which it will require years I able and honest service on the t of one of her own sons to efface. t force of circumstances has indeed I ht us low in reputation; insulting c are entertained and expressed t oig the integrity of " Louisiana e elans," and the methods of car. - ggery have predominated for so a years in our political life, that it r i opmmon thing to find in the North- a press cynical intimations that job- c controls the acts of our officials c corruption riots in all the depart- a ats of our public affairs. Nothing be more humiliating to a high ted people than these facts; but, g facts, they must be met in the 1 per way. -The acte of our Executive and Legis- a e during the trying period through we have just passed have gone ' far towards removing from the i n of the people of the North the I impressions that had been I upon them in regard to us, but a exists among them still the sus- I t a that our reoent exhibition of vir- a has had more of tha elements of i isiaon about it than of free will. * devil was sick, the devil a monk - d be, the devil was well, and devil -rmneak was he." So long as ipod upon the brink of possible -There was little merit in such leslons and saote of publio virtue as v been witnessed in Louisiana of ; but now that weare free, it is not un.sh to say that the eyes st the ' are upon us, watching to see --ue we shall make of our liberty. l; ernatoral question settled, the [ dlaning act whereby we enter - ' live political relations with the a -ic s tbh election of a member of States Benate. The exorcise - S. Wt to the almost equal two irtes in that body, us " sre tica gae of we onftes shat 1u.Iidu&Uy jhBpw oarr atm feel, that the stpreme moment has come when the proud people of this State, writhing under the insults and calumnies that have been heaped upon them for the last twelve years, but having at last won the golden oppor tunity of vindicating their character from foul aspersions, should hasten to prove to the world that, though des peration, under intolerable wrongs, may have driven them to oooasional acts of violence, their honor and political integrity have remained intact through out ail the trials to which they have been subjected Do you realize that every incident in the approaching Sena torial contest will be watched with jeal ous vigilance by your constituents, each one of whom feels that there is infinite ly more at stake in this matter than the mere selection of a competent repre sentative at Washington-that his own political character and the reputation of the State he loves so well will be di rectly affeoted by your sation ? For deveral days past, the evidences of active intrigues in regard to the elec tion of a Senator have been patent to the most superficial observer, and we deem it our duty to utter at once a word of solemn warning to our legislators. No good purpose can be subserved by mincing matters or beating about the bush. We learn that certain influences are actively at work designed to bring about such a state of affairs as to give to the recent upholders of the Packard conspiracy the balance of power in the Senatorial struggle. The most plausi ble and insidious suggestion which has emanated from these sources is, that the Democratic and Conservative cau cues shall select from the numerous candidates in the field a certain number whose names alone shall be allowed to be presented when the formal balloting begins in open session- the object of this scheme being to enable tricksters like Warmoth and McMillen, who con trol the bulk of the Republican vote, to select from among these Democrats the one whom they regard as not unlikely to yield to their influence and to aid and stand by them in some future contests for power. Gentlemen of the Legisla ture, we beg of you not to allow your. selves to be entrapped into any such scheme as this. The condemnation which the consummation of such a trick would call forth from your constit. uents would completely efface from their hearts the gratitude they now bear you for the honest work you have done during the last three months. T.he Democratic-Conservative party of Louisiana have just emerged victo ri.oU frol a gall&~t struggle, and will hot tolerate any surrender to or com promise with the enemy. They demand the election to the United States Senate of a man thoroughly in personal sym pathy and political accord with them selves; a man who has been tried and not found wanting, and the mere an nouncement of whose election will sat isfy the country that no improper in fluences have controlled the action 9f the Legislature. So far as fitness and availabilty are concerned, honesty, fidelity and capacity are the only tests to which the candidacy of any aspirant need be subjected, nor will there be the slightest hesitation on the part of the United States Senate in ad mitting to his seat any gentleman se lected by us, who is known to the coun try as a man of moderate tendencies, and who would not deem it his duty to rise from his seat on every possible oc casion to denounce Mr. Hayes as a fraudulent usurper. It is not, therefore, of vital importance that any particular person should be selected, but itis of the utmost consequence that the action of the Legislature be the expression of the free and untrammeled will of the Dem ocratic-Conservative majority; that it be not affected or influenced in the slightest degree by the political jobbers who may control the Republican vote, and that the minds of the people shall not be darkened by even the shadow of a suspicion that the successful candi date owes his election to any influences or combinations that can not be openly avowed. We were glad to welcome back home our esteemed friend Edwin L. Jewell, who has been doing good service to the country in Washington during the last session of Congress. Washington breezes seem to have dealt beneficially with Mr. Jewell, and we can but con gratulate him upon his improved ap pearance and healthy looks. His talk is cheerful about the future of Louisi ana, inasmuch as it may depend upon the good will of the Administration, and he brings none but good tidings from the Natibnal capital. A. F. L.
