Come now, Patterson, brace up and talk a little. The country hasn't heard from you for three days and three C , Packard seems to have a delu sion that he is injecting hie diurnal epistles into the ear of the public. It is an awful mistake. The fight against Presildent Hayes Is a fight against the tolid sense ,,t the whole country. That is what makes it so hard and so harmless. If the President would allow himself to be badgered into just a little Johnso nian snappishness and obduracy, he c would give dead leads of solid comfort to the implacables. The ghost of the oll Whig party is might restless in its grave. It the Presldent was proceeding In his treatment of the Honthewrn lis- " lion without any accurately dleilned e methods, we nmight expect from him much fluent discourse about "my policy." In the interest of retrenchment and reform, the heads of departments in Washington are again "reducing the force." Upon what prinelple does the force become so congested that it de mands this periodical phlebotomy? i The daily vroclatnmaone in Louisiana are losing their defiant ring. When the Nicholls men begin to give em phatic pledges and to offer bonds to keep the peace, and when Packard pitches his tune on a melancholy minor key and sues for recognition, it looks as if the stern soldiery, who are engaged in suppressing constructive domestic violence, would soon be out of a job. Those sages who were in a hurry to make up their minds that Mr. Hayee was an indifferent, goody sort of a man because he was not always in a state of visible volcanic tumult, and was not in the habit of discharging cheap thunder and lightning to order, ought to have remembered that the two men who tri umphantly led this nation through the two capital rlises of its history were distinguished primarily for Integrity and mnodesty. !I1ONt'IPA, INISEISITEISINEI's. I One Thou.naln Mllin of Iollner Onrtl t.y 011r !llcq. INew York Public, April 1,. I We have now gathered statlsthcs of municipalities having in 1870 more than four-fifths of the entire municipal in debtedness reported in the census. In 9 1870 the reported debts of these munici palities amounted to $2l.9,i3sr,55r1, but i their aggregate Indebtedness aecording to the latest data we have been able to obtain was $744,078,104, an increase of one hundred and seventy-six per cent. Q There remain munlolpalities, which were f reported in the census as owing $59,208, 979. If there has been no increase whatever in the debts of these munici palities, which is by no means credible, Sthe aggregate municitpal indebtedness must be at least $808,3 0l,08i:. But if, as a is more probable, the Increase in unas certained debts has been as large as in s debts of which reports have been ob ir tained, the aggregate municipal indebt edness exceeds $907,512,88f. As a con If siderable number of the reports are not e of late date, farther allowance must be made for Increase during an average of about one year. The apparent ilcrease ' since 1570 has been about $96,500oo,t) yearly. It seems reasonable, therefore, r. to estimate the present mnunicpal in *- debtedness of this country at $1,004, s 000,000. THE iiT. IOlrlTE FI:rE.. it itrlnw an Inroad of UnrSlnrs nnld T'nleven In Mt. Inutl. tUlnoinnati Enquirer.] Sr. Lovis, April 20.-The fire, or some thing, seems to have broughtan unusual crop of burglars thieves and garroters into our city, the record of the past week showing that it Ic a perilous ven ture to perambulate line streets at late hours--a danger which newspaper men feel keenly, as their calling rarely per mite them to go homeward until the "wee small hours" have set in. This morning at two o'clock P. J. Ferguson, a well known attache of the (lobe Democrat, and a local writer of con siderable celebrity, was garroted by four men near his house, who felled him to the ground with a blow from a club, and proceeded to rob him. His cries of "watch" luckily aroused a near neighbor who threw up a window and called polce, when the garroters made off. Ferguson--wonderful and inex plicable to relate in connection with a newspaper man-had a pocket full of money and a valuable watch and chain on him, but lost neither, escaping with nothing worse than a bad hbump over the left eye. It took him half an hour to find a policeman, to whom he related the bold crime, but to no purpose, as the criminals had made a successful flight. This instance illustrates the general feeling of insecurits which per vades our society at presnt, and it would not be surprising to hear at any moment of an atrocious murder by these prowling outlaws.
