THE NEW ORLEANS REPUBLICAN AND DR. LAYTON. Editor Democrat-The Republican, its Issue of May 16th, makes some eon ments on the sentence put by Dr. Lay ton on the lips of the German Chancel lor: "Religious bellef may be any thing you please, as long as it is con fined to the individual's mental faith, but his conduct must not be ruled by it. Whenever religion crosses the State, re ligion must give way; the laws of the land, whatever they may be, must be observed." "This is American doctrine," says the writer in the Rtepublicnan. Such an as sertion cannot be answered seriously, because from such a doctrine the follow ing consequences should be drawn; the prophet Daniel in the lion's den, the three children in the fiery furnace of Babylon, were great criminals, for they resisted a law of the land ; they refused to obey a decree enacted by a powerful King. and promulgated with the great est solemnity. During three hundred years sla the beginning of the Church thousands upon thousands of Christians died rather than betray the dictates of their conscience; they were great criminals, undounotedly, since they dared to obey God rather than man. Many of their brethren commit the same crime now-a days, not only in the heathen countries of Asia, but in more civilized spots of Europe. Teuy pirfer to undergo lines, exiles, and death itself, rather than obey human statutes opposed to the law of Go.d. It is supplosed that the Rfelpblic.n has overlooked th',so plain conloiusions drawn from his premises. He knows full well that hmrnaum conscience is ac countable to no civil tribunal; this'ro quires no argument -it is as clear as lmoun-daty. CATIo I('. I,ady Vnlitors to the Lelialllaure. To see large parties of well dressed ladies and gentlemen going up to the Olpitol, visiting the Senate and House, calliIg on the Governor, chat ting with the heads of departments, and making merry all about the dismal building, is a sight so new and novel as to invite attention. In all my experience in the South Carolina Capitol, whlch has been con siderable in the past eight years, I have never seen a lady within the walls of that building until this week This shows with wlhat abhorrence the whole thing was regarded by the white peo ple. They had as much aversion to their Capitol as to a small-pox hos pital. Hlow changed I Yesterday and to-day I have seen two or three hundred ladies visiting the Capitol. Seats have been provided for them as much as possible on the floor of the two houses, and the sight of so much style and beauty among them makes the old-time colored legislator open his dull eyes in astonish ment. These having nused and testel the value of this compound are respectfully informed that it can be ha.a at the Drug Store of I. L. I LYON and many other druggists of this city. To the uninitiated and skeptical I will say that, in placing it belore the public. I have de vlated from the whole conclave of inventors "of the surest and best anti-bilious medicines " etc. I allude to their Invariable secr(cy of ingre dients. The usual and onlyether mode in pro ducing Sulphuretted Iron is by the hydrogen process, where it is made by hundreds of pounds for the commerce of the world, and is not to be depended on, as it contains too great a proportion of carbt*n (charoll). which cannot be avoided in the process of their manufac- p turing it. This Suilplhurot of RefIned Steel is the pure sl phuret of steel having nort a particle of fir iign matter in its combination. It is made by hand. Those eminent professors of chemistry and phiysicians of Frnmne, tog-ther with the United states Dispen:satory, state that the great obje',t in administering Iron is to get the greatest quantity ilto the gastric juice of the stomach, a~ S it is intindidl to , enov.e and purify the blood, and its known value as a tonic. nimy t W.
