Statlet re show that In 107, 91,000 pvO ple and 4,00 aattle were kWjled in IndIa by snak.fed sad ld D , lie lite Auditor, George B. Johnson, returned to the city and surrendered to the warrant which had been issued for his arrest on an indictment by the Grand. J-, for embeuslemrent. Of course, Xr. ohnson had no difficulty in giving bond for his appearance. But does this end the matter relative to his audacious act of holding and concealing the records, vouchers and books of the Auditor's office, and of thereby arrest ing and obstructing the operations of the State governmet ? As an innocent and honest man, his first act should be to place these records in possession of the legal officers of te State. If these books contain no record of fraud; it they contain the evidence of no dishonesty and publio swindles on the part of the men who constituted the ast State adminietration, what reason Mr. Johnson have for refusing to S.oe. them? When he persist. in , thsere not some lament ab. 'weakeess or deficiency in our laws, or in their administration, that he can not be punished or imprisoned until he does produce them? The New York Bun's Washington cor respondent affirms that Foster is Hayes' candidate for the Speakership if he can win. The correspondent also says that, if he can do no better, the President is willing to take a Southern Democrat who wfll make the committees to suit the Administration. The only sort of influence the President can exert in the election of a Speaker isa corrupt Influ ence. The President has no business, under any circumstances, to interfere in the matter, and we trust the statement of the Bun's correspondent is what it reads like-sensational. As to the eleo tion of a Southern Democrat through Administration influences on the oondi tions mentioned, thatis ridiculous. Any such Democrat would be immediately kicked out of the party and it would be impossible to make up a combination of renegades from both parties to elect him. Secretary tichurz is creating great -consternation and terror in the Indian Bureau. The Secretary, it is said, is determined to dive to the bottom of the dirty pool created by the Indian ring. It seems that the number of Indians en titled to olothing, rations and other allowances has been vastly overstated, and by these overstatements the ring has made large sums of money. The robberies by the ring have also been atrired on through the Land Depart /ment. Scrip supposed to have been issued for the Indians is alleged to have been used by the ring. The land cov ered thereby would be stripped of its timber and then, by collusion in the Washington oflee, the same scrip would be lifted from the stripped land and located on a fresh piece. Under the vigorous direction of Esco. bedo the cause of Lerdo has received a good send off In North Mexico by the capture and occupation by troops in his interest .ef various points com mencing at El Paso. We confidently expect, with thegreat influence of Esoo. bedo and the always strong hold of the party of Jutre in that part of the Re public, that it will rapidly overrun the whole country north of the Sierra Madro and re-establish 'its ascendency there. This result will do much to open the way to the most practical plan of redeeming Mexico and securing for her a stable govern ment and permanent prosperity. This will be made a certain result by the adoption by ,Lerdo of a liberal pollcy in inviting colonization by Americans and by the recognition by our government of the independence and nationality at least of Northern Mexico. The scheme of the'Republic of the Sierra Madre has always pre sented the wisest and most practical .solution of Mexico's chronic political chaos. Recognition by the United States, with wise treaties and guarantees of the independence of North Mexico, would be the happiest stroke of states manship for both nations and peoples.
