Charlie Thorn has returned from Oinlo nal.t Capt. Oharlie sa! a he has a good steam boat under way-a better one even than the Flor .ane Meyer, built at the same yard. He also re ports work progressing rapidly on Capt. Jack Blanke' new boat. The 8t. Loauis Times says: "One of our New Orlemns eochanges has a fabhion of copying regn larly from the Times, without giving proper cred it, simply heading the items "St. Louis." This is a small matter and could well be borne by the Times, were It not that to remain silent would be ti encourage a feature of journalism which shows alike a pitiful lack of enterprise, and the appre elation of that quality in others.' The new, floe and fast Yaz o Valley is the reg ular mail packet for Vicksburg today, in place of the Natbche. Don't forget that the Thomas Sherlock leaves to-day. she is an excellent passenger steamer, and is of8oered by very clever and attentive gen. tlemen. To-day is the day named for the launching of -apt. 8covell's new lower coast packet. It is to be hoped that nothing has intervened to prevent it. The large, safe and fast side-wheel excursion steamer La Belle leaves, as per advertisement to-morrow for led Church. A delightful and very cheap manner of spending a few hours is thus offered. '- OCapt Oharlet's fine Lafourche paoket Assump t.on will turn her next trip (Tuesday) into an ex oursion trip down the Bayou to the Gulf, where she will remain three days, for the purpose of fishing, bathing, etc., returning to the city Mon day evenling Her attentive officers are leaving nothi tihone to make the trip pleasant. pt.Bassett will have the Martha ready by .dnesday next. She is being fixed up very *ioely. We are in receipt of a postal from Andy Swain. Andy is captain of the Annie, between Mobile and Point Clrar, and will remain so en gaged until the 1st of September when, he says, lae will be back to put a boat in led river. After going through another "biling down" Snag writes as follows: HOT SraRnios, ArK., June 19, 1877. Hot Springs has its attractions; some of the boys are talking about pitching their tents here; are about coming to anchor. They say it is a grand place to display one's gentus, talent, ener gy and patience. Carnahan and Wall propose opening a first class hotel on the lunch-house plan for unfortunate and disabled steamboat men. Henry has already enlisted the sympa thiles of the commiesijners, and thinks the gov ernment will generously come to his assistance should he need it. Parties contemplating visit ing these rejuvenstiung waters and deshous of learning more of this grand schenle, shobuld ad dress the proprietors, enclosing the usual re tainer, one month's board in advance, when they will be promptly furulshed with full particulars. Wash. Floyd's business is much more immense. Wash is organizing a highly moral variety show; he has engaged two fat women, a light weight trapezist, and six end ladies, and says the end to not yet I Look out for Wash. One of our handsome coast captains arrived the other day. He says he came over to locate some claims. Boll hinm down. We enjoy ourselves hugely-take i ride on the street cars, and then a walk by way of variety; visit Castle Park, a pleasant retreat in the suburbs, where a gentle man from the African frontier goes through a pogilistic tueeel with a large black bhear, and it is very entertaining. We bear it and step into a side institltion, where we witness a very oxedit able performance by Prof., DeVere and lady. The virtue of the waters here is truly wonder ful. Was talking with a man, a resident of the city. He says lie camle here about ten years ago, perfectly helpless, on a stretcher. He fell in with some Irish friends, who carried him to abhi Hole to bathe every .avening. The boys took him up one evening to give him his acsoe tomed bath. They put hm in the bath, intend ing to leaveo him an hour; but they got on a spree and forgot all about their patient. The re sult was the poor man remained in the pool all night. lie couldn't get out, so he thought; but when daylight came he made an efflrt and, muoh to his surprise, he could walk, and went down and aroused his friends. The excellent passenger steamer Thos, Sher lock, Low Kates master, M. L. Virden clerk, leaves to-day, without fail, at 5 p. m., for Morm phis, Cairo, Louisville and Cincinnati. EXCHANGE CLIPPINGS. ST. Louis, June 21.--Railroad corporations continue to discriminate in favor of towns lying along the river and that are reached by steamers. For instance, on the Missouri, freights are car ried by rail for a distance of over two hundred miles for live cents a hundred, This is a samp e of the competition steamboats have to fight. But it is not competition; it is a system of comme, cial warfare which has always proven, and wil; continue to prove, as disastrous to the country as the most sanguinary struggle that has undu lated our fair land with graves and burdened it with debt. It means ruin and bankruptcy to all parties in the end. Capt. B. B. Pegram's great steamer James Howard is steadily filling up, aLd will leave for New Orleans on next Sa urday. Capt. Frank Hicks leaves for the South in a day or two, and will return in 1eptember and load his Iron steamer aroaindelt. He says It I too dull to run her now. The St. Lonus Board of Trade has lodoroed the propositlon to Oongress to change the superin tendence of our Western river Improvemente from the army engineers to the Navy Depart ment, and has ordered 1000 coples of the bill printed with a view of its general distribution among the different boards of trade throughout the country. Capt. Oh. M.. BScott has been en trutsted with their distribution among river men. Capt, Thos, t. Reynolds, Mexican Gulf pilot, is in the city fitting out the newly completed iron steamer, the last one bI'Ilt by Theodore Allen, of the St. Louis Iron Boat Building Company, The new boat is not completed in another sense-the name has not been determined on, but City of 9t. Loule, 'heodore Allen, J. B. Price and others have een suggested as appropriate. The new boat is owned by J. B. Price, df Jefferson City, Mo., and is to run as a mall packet between In dianola and Corpus Christi, Texas. The boat will be ready to leave this port in about thirty days in charge of OCapt. Reynolds, who is a weather-beaten boatmen with twenty years of continunous experience of gulf coast navigation. The J. B. Price, referred to above, is the same gentleman who bhas ust given up the lower coast mail contract. We have been told that this boat was first intended for the coast, and that Mr. Price afterwards ohanged hie mind, and had her built for Texas.-- En. DMOCnaAT. MARINE NEWS.
