The heat for the past few days has been made bearable by gentle breezes, for which many thanks have bheen uttered. Yesterday afternoon, by way of variety, we had a heavy shower, as companied by thunder and lightning. Busineas moderately active. Capts. Soovell and iea left yesterday. Capt. Rea says Capt. Scovedl is going to try Ili skill at building a light boat for Red River; but he will have the lightest of the two. Capt. Ilea will visit Madison, Cincinnati and Pittsburg. The Eureka will certainly leave to-morrow on a grand excursion to the Gulf, by the way of iavyou Lafourche. Site will leave here at 8 p. m, Donaldsonville IFriday morning at 6, and Thibo daun at 10 a. m., arriving at the (Gilf at 0 p. m. Hhe will remain there three days, returning to leave on her next regular day, Thursday, July 12. Capt. She is commanded by a prudent and experienced captain, and all of her arrangements Irom saloon to kitchen, including a well-stocked bar, are on a scale of splendor and comfiort adapted to the taste of the most fastidious. The renowned Charles Mirgan follows the Mitche 1, and will leave here next Wednesday, the 11th inst. Mr. John Carnahan, of the Lee, and Lon Mac Farlin, left Hot Springs SuBonday for New Orleans via Memphis and the river. Mr. Harry Summers, formerly of Red River, and at present engaged in steamboating on the Magda;ena river, Bouth America, arrived here a few days ago, by steamer, and Is stopping at the St. Charles. Anticipating there will be but little business done to-day on the glorious Fourth, Capt. Trini dad has deferred the departure of his fine pack et, Willie, until S ,p. m. to-morrow, when she will leave, positively, for the Atchafalaya and Bayon Teoho, through to St. Martmosville. The Willie is in -no line, running simply on merit, with "regularity, speed and prompt attention to busi ness" as her motto. Capt. Stweeney has changed the hour of depar ture of the Billy Collins on Saturday's back from 4 p. m. to 8 a. m., finding it much' more suitable to his patrons. Capt. W. 8. Albert and Harry W. Stem were presented by Mr. A. Ward Robin son, formerly river editor of the Times, with a tine chromo of the Prodigal Son, taken from the orignal $50.0000 painting, burnt in this city ayear since, at Melodeon Hall. Capt. Win. Gillen, a well known Red river command( r and pilot, and a native of Lawrence county, Ohio, writes his old friend, Capt. John K)1e, he is visiting his pa rents, who reside at Champaign, I linois, and will return to New Orkans in ten days. He will in tro :uce a new packet in the Red river trade this fall. Hall & Co.. of New Albany, have received a contract to build a boat for .he Rod liver trade. It will be 120 feet long, 28 feet wide and 4 feet depth of hold. Louis, July 1.-Another river decline of a general nature has set in, but low water is appa rently far off. River business and rates remain unchanged. The new packet line project continues to be talked about, but the projec ors will continue re ticent until the arrangements are further ad vanced. The certificate of incorporation will be received from Jefferson City before the name of the company, the incorporators and officers will be made public. PARA'IRAPIA FROM JOHN N. BOVIN(ER'R IDIARY. [St. Louis Times.] In 1835 the steamer Empress, Capt. John W. Russell, was in the cotto'n trade between Natchez al New Orleans. Capt. Russell was a power flly built man, and had but few equals on the river in the art of self-defense. Among the crew or tlihe Empress there wee a negro named "'abe," who for size and mke-np was not in erior to the craptain. Well, one day while the hoat was taking on cottrn, Oabi was rolling long a bale and whirling it around on its side as though it was as light as cork. In passing, Capt.
