The Port Eades arrived from and departed to
St. Louis yesterday. Capt. Davis has given the
gadla' chimneys a coat of black.
Capt. John Taylor brought the Eva to the land
yesterday and will back her out to-morrow
at lO a. m. on her first trip to Port Eads in Capt.
Baselt's dally United States mail line. The peo
ple or the Lower Coast will find the Eva a No. 1
steamboat, one that will make her schedule time
with ease. Capt. Taylor is most favorably known
rw many good qualities both of head and heart,
:-mad will make his packet a very popular one.
Mesere. John O. Vallette and Ernest Reinhardt

The Billy Collins leaves every Tuesday and

SOIa.nrvATI, July 12.-0. L. Brennan and oth
, late wners of the steamer JJniata, brought
suit at Pittaburg yesterday against ex-Sheriff
Mare and others for $25,000, with interest from
the 19th of May, 1875. At that time SheriffHare
asised the boat for debt. While in his posses
tlon the boat was burned, on the 27th day of
May, the same year. The claim against the boat
was for coal, and the Court of Common Pleas do
aided it had.no jurisdiction, but that the United
-States Court had. The plaintife hold that the
defendants were in unlawful pqesessi. i of the
t as trespassers, hence the suit.

Ih Capt. John 8. Devenny, ex-Supervising In
tor, says :
The captain said he was first appointed to the
office in February, 186,5 When Mr. Lincoln took
seat, in 16, the Incumbent was a man
med Crawf1. He was soon removed by
hLry Chase, and E. M. Shield, of Oincinnati,
.nted his stead. Shield was a Democrat,
but was connected with the Cincinnati Commer
, and obtained his appointment through the
Uaaence of that journal. In February, 1865,
ld was removed for disobeyance of orders,
and was sucoeeded by Capt. Devenny. It ap
pears that in the fall of 1864, when the excite
ment of the Presidential campaign was high,
e of the Republioans of this city char
tred a steamboat for the purpose of attending
mass meeting somewhere. Capt. Grace, ti e
local inspector, and a Democrat, condemned the
boat, and thus prevented the Republicans from
-oing to the meeting. For this he was re
aoved, and Shield was asked to designate a per
son to sunoceed him. This he refused to do, and
insisted on the reinstatement of Grace. MeCul
loch, who was then Secretary of the Treasury,
removed Shield for his conduct in the premises,
and appointed Capt. Devenny, as already noted.
Soon ft Andy Johnson became President, or in
ber, 1865, the captain was Ebounced, and
Shield reappointed. In starch, 1867, the latter
was again dismissed for disobedience of orders
the captain was reanpointed, and has hebl
office until the present time. In relation to
decapitation Capt. Devenny said: "I attribute
my removal in a great measure to a misrepre
tation by Supervising Inspector General Du
mont, who told Secretary Sherman that I was
going to resign.
"You see, in consideration of the lift Mr. Feh
renbatch gave Stanley Matthews in his struggle
the United States Senatorship, the latter
peromised him a supervising inspectorship. The
ofice at Detroit was at first selected, the in
r of that district being under charges, but
charges were not sustained, and he could not
removed under the civil service rule. Then
e ofice at Buffalo was suggested, but it was de
that it would not do to send an Ohio man to
w York. About the time of the inauguration
President Hayes I learned that applications
been made for my place, and I went to Wash
to look after my interests. While there I
assured by Secretary Sherman that I woula
be disturbed if there were no charges
ht aganst me. No charges were ever
ht, and yet I am disturbed."

Bee and barges are receiving for New Orleans,

of them will get away before Saturday. The
Grand Republio will retire till the times im
prove. The Anohor Line steamers have brought

wheat. Gol. Bohoonmaker, of Pitteburg, left for
the South this evening.
