Of the fourteen different sorts of wine drank ten were French. -Greenbacks are the favorite currency in the Black Hills. They are worth $11 more on the hundred than gold dust. Building lots that sold for $900 last fall are now in active demand at $1000. -A Washington telegram reports that Presidelt *Hayes has requested the naval officer at Baltimore to appoit as his chief deputy the son of an ex-rebelit whose house the President was cared for when wounded at the battle of South Mountain. -P'rince Bismarck is taking the water at Kissingon. On his' arrival he published a card to the bathers, begging them not to con gregate for the purpose of staring at him, and not to recognise or bow to him in public. If they did, he would be obliged to ignore their salutations and be condemned as an ill mannered man, or he would at evert instant be compelled-to take off his hat, catch cold, and loose all benefit of the water. -In 180 the range of the American bison extended across the whole width of the United States territory into the British possessions on the north and the Mexican Republic on the south. To the east It reached nearly to the line of the Mississippi Valley, to the west to the great mountain chains. Now the last .refuges of the animal are limited to a couple of comparatively small circles. One of these lies far to the north, and is distributed be tween the territories of Montana and Dakota: the other far to the south, on the borders of New Mexico and Texas. ... A good many people are puzxlod when asked the reason why the. President's real dence at Washington is called the "White House." The origin of the name is as follows: When the British, in 1814, took Washington, they destroyed the publid buildings, includ ing the President's mansion, which, like the Capitol, was built of grayish sandstone. The burning of the woodwork smoked and discol ored the stone walls, the natural 'appearance of which could not be restored. Uniformity was secured by the application of white paint. The changed appearance from gray to white attracted attention, and gave it the appella tion of the "White House," which It has since borne. --Scientific opinion in France is by no means unanimous as to the desirability of creating an inland sea in Algeria. M. Naudin read a paper on the subject at the last meeting of the Academy of Sciences, in which he said its sanitary effects would be deplorable. He as sorts that to fill thy basin with salt water would be equivalent to reproducing in Algeria all the worst features of the Pontine marshes. Capt. Roudaire admits that even in the centre there would not be more than eighty feet of water, and the whole coast line would have so little water that It would be little better than a sand bank, with an admixture of salt and fresh water, upon which the strong solar light and tropical heat would act in the most doletorious manner for two-thirds of the year, c..using a rapid decomposition of organic mat ter, and spreading contagion for miles in every direction. ---In the Court of Common Pleas, Dublin, a butcher named Knowles sued Mrs. Caroline Vorechoyle, now Mulligan, for breach of promise of marriage. They met on a steamer bound from Liverpool to Dublin. She was the mistress of a fine residence--Roebuck Hall-and the mother of three children. The plaintiff was a widower with one child. Soon after their first meeting they be came engaged, to be married. As they were of different religions there was ditflculty about their being married in Dublin, and they went to Liverpool, where they had to remain fourteen days before the Registrar would marry them, the oxpense of their stay, $480, being paid by Mr. Knowles. In the meantime the lady's friends induced he to break off the match and to return to Dublin, where she subsequently married a dealer in periodicals. From year to year for tile past half century, she has gone from bad tI worse. Her history has been as disastrous as eventful. Since her independence o Spain she has never known a periodl o more than four years without a revolution and at one time four different military ad venturers occupied the Presldential cdalh in fifteen months. She has had two Eum perors, three or four Dictators, a multitude of Presidents, two fqreign invasions,tinces rant domestic and local wars, countless pro nunciamientocs. No wonder she has steadily declined in population and wealth. Iri 1821 the poptulation of Mexico was estimated to ix 120c,0,uee. At present it is estimated to lx 7,t5OU00,. and only a few hundred thousand out of this number are of pwer European de scent. the rest being Aztec or mixed. Yel Mexico is naturally one of the fairest and most eligible countries on the face of the globe. Shall such a country be abandoned at last to complete desolation? If not, how is it to be rescued from such a fate without some sort of American nlterposition? The new town council of Lake Charles has organized and commenced its duties at once. Three prisonprs, two murderers and a horsnthief, escaped from the parish jail of St. Mary last week. Central sugar factories are gaining adherents constantly among the smaller sugar planters of Louisiana. (St. James parish was lately redis tr oted into eight police jury wards, in stead of ten, like the other parishes. Private McCarthy. of Company K, lath United States Infantry, was shot and killed by a negro in. Baton Rouge on Sunday night last. W. B. Hall was shot and killed by W. 8. B. Mltohiner, on the Phillips place, near Rooky Mount, in Bossier parish, on Monday, the 9th inst. A telegraph line is to be built from Iberia to Vermilionvillet via St. Mar tinsville and Breaux Bridge. The money therefore is rapidly being raised. The citizens of Franklin are raising $*2t10 for the purpose of removing the obstructions from Bayou Yokely and digging a canal to drain the water o* the lower end of the Harding road. $1900 has already been raised. We are pleased to see at our office last week, says the Lake Charles Echo Messrs. N. R. Oloott and C. C. Barr, of Houston, Texas. Connected with the engineer's department of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Company, they were here on a preliminary survey between Orange and Lake Charles, for the purpose of reporting the most avail able route between those points. The oars have been running for several months from Houston to Orange and we have an abiding faith that we will be waked up some morning by the whistle of the locomotive at Lake Charles. Mississippl. Mass meetings and barbaoues are now in order in Mississippi. The delegations from Clarke, Jasper and Wayne are for Lowry. The city of Aberdeen is out of debt and has $5028 in bank. The new county of Quitman has in structed for J. M. Stone for Governor. Attala, Montgomery and Leake counties have endorsed R. Walpole for Auditor. Jefferson county had its Democratic convention last week and nominated its entire county ticket. The lymber cut on the Mississippi river, during the past winter, is esti mated at 147,000,000 feet. Tallahatchie river, Mississippi, is again in its banks. The farmers are busy planting their overflowed lands in corn. According to the Liberty (Miss.) Herald a large number of the men, youths and boys of that town celebrated the 4th by getting drunk. The darkeys of Mississippi and Ala bama had an inter-State base ball match at Demopolis, Ala., on the 12th, which resulted in a glorious victory for the Alabama nigs. The University of Mississippi con ferred the degree of D. D. on Rev. J. S. Moore, late of Jefferson Texas, and Rev. J. N. Craig of Holly Springs, Miss. Davidson Collede confers the same de gree on Rev. G. R. Brackett, of Charles ton, 8. C. Texas. Texas. In the city of Houston there are $123, 000 due on back taxes. Miss Laura Strickland, of Jackaboro, is another victim to kerosene. ' A new court-house is being built at Groesbeck. The sugar cane crop of Texas is re ported in fine condition. It is more ex tensive than at any time since the war. A child of Major Burke, of Dallas was attacked by- rats while asleep and badly bitten about the face. Hog cholera prevails in Freestone county, and the farmers are losing heavily. Morgan leaves Houston out in the cold, and will build up Clinton by mak ing it the head of navigation on Buffalo Bayou. Stock raisers of Western Texas are going to have a meeting in Corpus Christi on July 20. Their Object is to take someaction in regard to fraudulent branding and stealing of stock. It is reported that 1500convicts will be put to work on the Galveston and Santa Fe railroad at once, and that the road will be completed to Belton, in Bell county by the first of September. This road will traverse one of the finest sec tions of Texas and open up one of the richest poetions of the State. The Chief has learned that Dee and Jim Bailey, the murderers of Deputy United States Marshal Greene had both been killed. The former died from wounds received recently in Bell county and the latter was waylaid and killed by unknown parties near Sulphur Springs, in Lampasas county. A difficulty occurred on Choctow creek a few miles south of Sherman last Sunday between two boys named John Wyrick and Joseph Coffee. Wyrick struck Coffee in the head with a stick nd from the effects of the blow Coffee died a short time after. Wyrick was put under $1500 bonds. Iowa Republieantsm. [N. Y. Tribune.] The candidate for Governor is a wholesale liquor dealer and the platform he stands on favors prohibition. The conve~tion favored inflation, but the Legislative ticket to be chosen is expected to re-elect Senator Allison without opposition, and Mr. Allison is an avowed hard.money man. An anti-Hays Re publican introduced a Hayes resolution in the convention for the purpose of having it voted down, and succeeded in his efforts, yet the party oxpect to carry the State by 50,000 ma jority. This curious conception of what a platform is for explains the inability of the Iowa Republicans to understand why the President is trying to obey the one he was cloected on. Free Cuba. [N. Y. Herald.] The colored men of this city have started an important and praiseworthy movement looking to the emancipation of their Cuban brethren from slavery.
