The business would no doubt have been on a more liberal scale had factors bten willing to give way a fraction, so as to admit the exb ou, ion of pending orders, but they adhered even more stringently to their previous pretensionr, and the medium and lower grades ruled still strong er, requiring an advance of a partial yo on those desoriplione. Prices were strengthened by the favorable tenor of the telegrams and the reduo. tion in the stock. The dispatobhes reprted Liverpool firmer, with an advance in Uplands of 1-16d, and sales of 10, 000 bales arrivals partially 1.32d higher Havre 1 franc higher and hardening, and New York quiet and steady at an advance of 1-16o on spots and irregular for futures, which were quoted at noon at an advance of 1-1U0@5-1000 on Julys to No. vembers and a decline of 1-100@7-1000 in the later months, and closed at a net decline of 1-100@3.1000, but an advance of 1-1000 in Sep tembers. The Exchange makes the amount on shipboard not cleared (before to-day's exports of 8074 bale.) 18,867 bales, embracing 2990 for Liverpool,9718 for Havre and 664 for coastwise ports, leaving in presses, agreeably to its account at 12 m., 83, 952 bales, only a part of which is on sale. The Billy Colline leaves every Tuesday and Saturday at 8 a. m. for Grand Isle, the finest summer resort in the Southern country. The Blue Wing No. 8 will arrive this evening, and return to-morrow, as usual, for the upper the United States mail and passenger steamer Mgrtha, W. S. Bassett master, Messrs. Legler and Barrols clerks, leaves to-day at 10 a. im. our Port Eads and all plantation landings on the lower coast. On her Saturday trip the Martha will go through the Jettles, out into the gulf, re turning by the way of Southwest Pass. The United States mail packet Eva, John Tay lor master running in connection with the Martha, will arrive this evening and leave td morrow at 10 a. m. for Port Eads. A letter was received here yesterday f'om Louisville in which it was stated that Capt. Tally Soovell's new lower oq st packet Alvin would be ready to leave on the 28th, and if ready she would tow to this city the fuor new barges for the New Orleans and Red Blver Transportation Company. The clock for the canal street ferry building will have illuminated dials, and the tower will Ie built higher. The John 1I. Hanna will not be able to leave for the Ousohita, but will be represented this trip by the flue steamer John Hownrd. The Howard will be at the landing this mortihg under the charge of the officers of the Hanna. Capt. H. T. DeVeard, formerly of the Kounts line and other boats, is running a paper mill on the New Basin. The fine sidewheel Ohio river passenger steamer Thoe. Sherlock, Lew Kates in command, M. L. Sr. Louts July 14,--The pool line to New Or leans is still in operation. The new line is dropped for the time being. Rates to New Or leans are 200 per 100 and 400 for flour. The Anchor Line boats in from below to-day brought 15,000 sacks wheat. 1 he Grand Repnb'io was towed to the docks, where she will rest till September 15, when she will enter the LMemphis and New Or eans trade. In the meantime she will have her upper guards out away, and be transformed into a complete oe)tton boat. She will be supplied with an addi tional boiler, and have her present battery of seven lengthened four feet. This will greatly in crease her speed. She will also be painted and put in first-class concition. Her officers will be the same as last year. It is said by knowing ones here that certain wealthy parties are contemplating putting two additional boats in the New Orleans and Vicks burg tred", and that they will make an offer for the Grand ltRpublio. 'he object is to make up a company and buy the Ribet E. Lee out, and keep her in the trade. Who the parties are has not yet transpired, but it is hinted that Brown and Jones have nothing to do with it. On the last trip up of the Charles Morgan,Capt. Albert Stein disovered, when above lHenderson, a deck passenger named Henry Bessel, of Lexington, Ky., who was seriously sick. Capt. Stein was ex oeedingly annoyed that he had not been sooner apprised of the man's condition but at once adopted measures for hie relief. dapt. John Sin zich chanced to be on board, and to Capt. Stein's inquiry, suggested sending him to et. Mary's Hospital. The suggestion was adopted, and he was sent to the hospital at Capt. Stein's expense, who also gave Capt. Sinzich five dollars to aid the man in Iesobhingiome if he got well. By the as siduous attentiatTof the Sisters and the especial attention of the attending physician, Bessel, after three weeks, has recovered and is now ready to gohome, with his heart full of gratitude to the noble commander whose humane and gen erous conduct doubtless saved his life. He is anxious everybody should know that humanity still exists in this uncharitable world. The Memphis Avalanche says: "Some of the folks down about Vicksburg think the Thompson Dean and her new owners are not likely to have a walk over in their proposed trade between that port and New Orleans. It is not likely that they expect to; but the owners of the Dean are thor ough business men. wilh an abundance of capital and they know full well what they are doing. Their last snocess in evidence of this fact. It is not likely that all of their enterprises will prove plying ones, but then it pays like forty some times not to let them all pay," [Cincinnati Commercial, July 13.] Capt. Thos. F. Eckert, president of the West ern Insurance Company of Cincinnati, was warmly greeted on 'Change yesterday, it being the sixty-eighth anniversary of his birth. He was born over the river in Campbedl county, Kentucky, on his parents' farm. The house was torn down last summer. He has resided in Cin cinnati fifty years. He followed engineering on the river four years, and commanded steamers eighteen years on the Ohio and Misslssippi riv ers. He has built thirteen houses in Cincinnati, and several in Hamilton county. He has also bailt and commanded nine steamers, and owned and had charge of several others. He built the first Andrew Jackson in Whoeling, in 1833, and Florentine in 1835 - the first steamer built at Cincinnati by the late Alex. Temple, who died in Madison sev eral years since. He next built the Hyperion at Jeffersonvillo, the work being done by the late Jas. Howard. Howard was a carpenter on this boat with Capt. Eckert. Capt. Eckert also built two steamers called Paul Jones, one the "July 4th," and the "Underwriter" and wrecking steam er Thos. F. Eckert. He says he was never sued individually or protested, and never cost the in suranoe companies one cent although he burned the steamer Walout Hills, thereby losing 680,000. Capt. Eckert is hale and hearty, and good bear and deer hunter, and one of the best rifle shots in America. He takes a lively minterest In steam boat matters to-day, and does not permit a new steamer to visit the Cincinnati wE arf without he inspects her. Long may he wave.
