Behan, Bart Able, Red river; Katie, Arkopolis. For the last three days the weather has not been so hot. If it holds out we can stand the balanee of the summer first rate. Bnusiness remains dull. Capt. Jack De Hart, from Cincinnati, and Lou MaoFarland, from Grand Isle, are in the city. The C. H. Durfee arrived from Red River yes terday, and Capt. Melhesney is considerably elated at the fine trip she briught, which was as follows: 167 bales cotton 1176 sacks oats, 716 sacks bran, 258 sacks oiLo.ake and 408 head eiltle. The Blue Wing, leaving this 10 a. m., is the only departure to-day for the upper coast, as far as Donaidsonville and the Ashland plantation. Geo. Dilton writes under date of the 14th, con cerning Capt. Charlie Thorn's new Red river packet: "Bull full shaped and ready for her deck beams, which are all out and ready to go on. Her model will be as beautiful as was Cleooatrs, when she took in that boy Maro Anthony. Capt. Charlie, accompanied by his wife, will leave on the Sherlock to-morrow for Cincinnati, where he will remain until his clipper is finished." The Bed RBiver Transportation Company, under whose colors Capt. Thorn's boat will sail, will, add three other new boats to their fleet by the fall, Capt. Bea's Capt. Mat doovell's and Capt. Dannals', besides which there wil be four new barges, and one of the finest passenger packets for the Grand Eoore trade that ever stemmed the waters of the old Red. This company have prom lsed the people of the Red river valley increased facilities for the transportation of their crops and freight during low as well as high water. That they will fulfill their promise to the letter there is no room for doubt. See their advertisement in another column. The Thos. Sherlock leaves to-morrow for the Ohio. She is a pleasant boat to travel on, her staterooms are comfortably furnished and her cabins and guards roomy. Mr. Virden, her chief clerk is a pleasant gentleman and is noted for his attention to passengers. The Billy Collins leaves for Grand Isle every Tuesday and Saturday at 8 a. m. A great place is Grand Isle. The pretty little Eva, Tom Taylor master, Capt. John 0. Vallette and Ernest Beinhardt clerks, leaves to-day at 10 a. m. for the Lower Coast through to Port Eads. The Eva, in connection with the Martha, carries the mail daily, and there is no such thing to be thought of as either boat failing to arrive or leave on time. The Martha will arrive this evening and leave to-morrow at 10 a. m. Capt. Bissett is deserving of encouragement f.r placing in the trade a daily line to Port Eads, and we hope he will receive it. The John Howard, F. A. Blanks master, Joe Holmes clerk, will leave to-day at 5 p. m. for the Blaok and Ouachita rivers, in place of the John H. Hanna. The Hanna will resume her trips as soon as her repairs are finished. The C. H. Durfee, Wallaoe MoUhesney in com mand, will follow the Dawn, leaving Saturday at The City of Augusta is in the hands of the sheriff, anI is advertised to be sold on the 28th inst. The Assumption is one of the fastest stern wheel boats on the river. The boat that tackles her had better be sure of her speed, for she's a'"bad 'an," sure. The Willie, detained in helping the Hanna out of her trouble, had not arrived up to dark. She was expected every moment, and will leave to day for the Teche. She will be the first de parture for that section, and we hope to see her go with a rousing trip, for there are none more deserving than Capt. Trinidad and his fleet Willie. The steamer Blue Wing No. 3, from the upper coast, arrived last evening. The United States mail packet Eva, from the lower coast, arrived yesterday on time, and will leave as advertised to-day. The Eureka, Capt. U. D. Terrebonne, was due last night from her excursion trip down the La fourche to the Gulf. She is receiving to leave to morrow, and will be the only departure for the Lafourche. The Blue Wing No. 3, J. A. Comstook master, leaves this 10 a. m. for Ben Tureand's, Donald sonville and the Ashland plantation, Ascension parish. Messrs. Wood, Dean and ieno clerks. The Lessie Taylor (in place of Sandy No. 2), H. IH. Broad master, Eng. Quatrevaux and J. B. Schmidt clerks, leaves to-day for the Atchafalaya. The Willie, E. B. Trinidad master, Frank Greig clerk, leaves to-day, at 5 p. m., for the Atohafalaya and Bayou Teche. Thq New Orleans and Red River Transporta tion Company steamer Dawn, Chas. Truslow master, O. W. Drown clerk, leaves to-day positively, at 56 p. m., for Shreveport and Jefferson. The splendid passeenger and United States mail steamer Katie (tin place of the Frank Pargoud), J. M. White master, W. N. Calmes clerk, is re ctiving to-day, to leave to-morrow at 5 p. m. for Vicksburg, Greenville, Arkapolls and all Bend landings. The passenger steamer Thomas Sherlock, Lew K~atee master, M. L. Louis, July 15.-Business is steadily im proving.. Passenger travel on the Upper Misiss slppi is heavier than it has been for many years, and Commodore Davidson has concluded to put on a daily line to St. Paul, commencing next Monday when the hour of departure will be changed to 12 m., instead of 4 p. m., as hereto fore. The Bee left for New Orleans, with a moderate tow, but the E. O. Stanard remains over till next week. The Belle of Shreveport follows the E. O. btanard in the pool line, which is still in existence. An immense quantity of new wheat is coming in, and it is the prevailing opin ion among boatmen that the coming season will be one of the most active known for a decade. Joseph B. Taylor, for many years an engineer on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, died Thure day morning at Monongabela City. New York Tribune: It costs a veesl I of 600 tons burden, carrying 20,000 bushels of grain, and sailing from Detroit to Liverpool direct, $t812 to make the voyage out and return. With the present uncertainly in regard to American wooden vessels receiving return cargoes, no ships sailing from Detroit direct can aflord to take grain at less than Od per bushel; and at this rate it is cheaper to forward grain by way of the tixes and Erie canal, and steamers from New York.. hli Bunt, of Nyack, New York, a practical boat.ian, has invented a novel means of propul sion for steamers. A COMposrrE STEAMERI.--At a meeting of the Detroit and Cleveland Steamboat Company, held Tuesday night, it was fully determined to build the new steamer which is to take the place of the H. N. Rice :upon an iron frame. This includes iron keelsons, and iron engine frame, iron water tight bulkheads, and iron deck frames. Such a steamer is considered very much better than an iron-covered boat, and practically will last for ever; since new planking can be placed upon the frame when any of the latter gives out, or any other portion can be renewed in the same way, and the steamer be as good as ever. Capt. Kirby is to furnish the plans and specifications, and is to give immediate attention to the same. As soon as the latter are adopted the work of con struotion will be pushed forward. 'B estimated oost of the boat is about $180,000. The new boat will be the only composite side-wheel steamer on the lakes. CIoINNwATI, juyi 15.-Capt. W. Wenz'l con tracted with Mr. A. Perry, yesterday, for a new light steamer. Her dimensions will be 145 feet long, 81 feeot beam and 4/, feet hold; cylinders 13 inches by 3% feet. Regarding the destruotion of the steamer Granger, the Little Rook Gazette gives the fol lowing particulars: The steamer was loaded with a heavy cargo of no-river freight, and was totally destroyed at the Jordan farm, a short distance above the railroad bridge,' Monday night. The firel broke out shortlyr after midnight, and is supposed to have been occssioned from the fact that the freight was pled too close to the boilers for safety. Only about one hundred saks of whea, i)lled on the bow of the boat, were saved out of the entire cargo. Capt. Yerkes and a number of the deokhands barely escaped with their lives, tihe Captain losing a large amount of ash which he hadl Iplaced under the head of his bed for safe-keeping. The boat was owned by Capt. Yerkes and others, and cost, only a short time ago, $2)000 bhe was not in sured, we are informed, and will prove a total loss. She had in tow a barge of corn, which took fire and was out loose, floating down oppo site the city, where it was boarded and safely oaded by Billy Campbell and his skiff ferryman. MARINE NEWS.
