Cloudy and warm yesterday,
Business not very active. The Bobt. Young,
however, had a good trip out.
the Frank Pargoed was towed from the dock
yesterday to the wharf head of Lafayette street,
where she will remain until next week, when she
will relieve the Katie.
The prospects for the Stella Block leaving
with a full trip to morrow are very good.
The Henry Tete will go on dock to have some
caulking done, and will be ready for busihess
within the next three weeks.
Capt. Johnson, of Mobile, has bought the Era
No. 9 from CaOpt. Charlie Arthur. We heard that
$6000 was the figure.
The paining of the Gov. Allen has certainly
been very artistically done. She fairly glistens,
and we have no doubt Capt. Brown Is proud of
the very fine appearance and condition of his
favorite. The Allen leaves to-day for Bayou
Sara.
See the Allen and La Belle advertisement in
another column.
The Ells Hughes will be the only departure for
the Lafourche to-morrow. A clerk will be found
to-day at the head of Bienville street receiving
freight.
"The Yasoo Valley is the regular mail packet
for Vicksburg to-morrow, in place of the Natchez.
The lower coast United States mail and pase
senger steamer Martha will arrive to-day and
leave tomorrow at 6 p. m. for Port Eads. Capt.
W. 8. Bassett commands.
The Bart Able lays up for repairs. Capt. Dick
Sinnott has the Texas to fill her place, and will
start her out to-morrow. Mr. (eo. Hamilton
will be in charge of the office.
Henry Holzner and Gus Brill have sold the
-Gus Iouse to W. N. . nrls, and will give their
attention to Iheir bars on the river. Mr. Burls is
an old steamboat agent, and will be pleased to
see his friends at his new headquarters.
The lower coast United States mail packet Eva,
John Taylor master, ,John O. Vallette clerk,
leaves this 10 a, ru. for the coast through to Port
E1.ada.
The fins steamer Assumption (in place of the
Henry Tete). leaves this 10 a. m. for the oosest
and Lafourehe, through to Thibodaux. 1'. A.

EXCHANOGE LIPPINGS.

One of the most sucnocessful steamboatmen that
has ever been connected with Mississippi River
commerce is Capt. William Campbell, coummand
er and part owner of the famous It. E. Lee.
Capt. Campbell is yet in the prime of life, being
but a little past forty, and enjoys a large fortune
which he has accumulated by his own unaided
efforts. He has been with Capt. Cannon for
nearly a quarter of a century, and the two are
ivarmly attached to each other. Persenally Capt.
Cannon is very popular, and is known to almost
every man, woman and child living between New
Orleans and Vicksburg.
Mr. Ed. Brown, the prince of stewards, has
been notified by Capt. James H. Pepper that his
services will be required on the [hompson Dean
this season again. He will leave early in Sep
tember to'right things in his department, pre
vious to her entering the Memphis and New Or
leans trade.
The Commonwealth will leave for New Orleans
on Wednesday, and the Bee and barges anl H. C.
Yaeger on Saturday. The Grand Tower, in from
Vacksburg, reports eight feet out to Cairo, and no
boats in trouble.
Rousters tere shipped up to-day at $25 per
month. and firemen at $30. All of the upper
streams are falling. Rates to New Orleans are
10 cents per bb) for flour and 20 cents per 100.

Capt. John Cailnon is builoing a fine, fast side.
wheel boat at Howaro's shipyard, for the New
• Orleans and Bayou Sara trade, She will be all
that can be found and admired in a fine, fast
bt, and, feeling that when loaded, she will " go
o"' quicker than lightning, we propose that she
ibe named "Cannon." Again, as modesty for
blis the old veterawfrom naming his magnificent
steamer after himself, we ask him to build the
boat, stand aside, give us the brush and paint,
and we will put upon each wheel-house the name
of "John W. Cannon." That sill settle it.
Oapt. John Cannon is in the city looking after
the interests of his new boat.
Capt. Scoville will command Capt. Kounz's n.w
steamer Alvin, just built here. She will leave for
New Orleans in a few days, and will tow the new
schooner and four model barges just built by the
Ibwards. The schooner goes to New Orleans and
, Galveston, and the barges to the month of Red
river.
The Alvin had up steam yesterday. All right.
Capt. Rea wont up to Madison to look after his
new boat, Alexander, yesterday. New Albany
furnishes her cabin outfit.
[Cincinnati Commercial, July 31.]
Capt. O. P. Bhinkle arrived from the wreck of
the Golden Rule yesterday morning, having come
to Memphis by river and the remainder of thB
way by rail. He is in cheerful spirits, notwith
standing his heavy loss, and is looking forward
with pleasure to the completion of his new boat,
which will be larger, finer and faster than the
Golden Rule. It will be ready for business about
Nov. 1. . L. Shalloross, of Louisville, Capt. (too.
W. Nears, of Cmicinnati, and Capt. Cooper, of
New Orleans, agents for the underwriters, were
all at the wreck when Capt. Bbinkle left. The
Charlie Hill is assisting the Eckert at the wreck.
The Thomas Sherlock has laid up to receive
recaulking, repainting and other repairs.
