TEE POPE AND 'HE PII.RIiM. Annie Brewster says, in a letter from Bome to the Boston Adl',rtisher: "The pilgrimages have ended, and it is just as we they are over, for they have nearly killed the Pope; if they had continued anuch longer he could not have survived. The sudden and unusual heat of the season added to the fatigue of receiving such crowds of peo!le, has made the Pope unusually feeble. One day his Holiness had a lonue it of fainting. When he revived, his attendants and doctors, seeing that he was deeply af fected by his situation, said encouraging words. The Pope shook his head and replied; 'Do not flatter. I know well that I am near my end.'" Staub is running the news department for everything it is worth. IAulIlana. Bayou Sara Fire Company No. 1 has reorganized. St. Tammany has been redistricted into nine wards. A great many deer are being killed in Franklin parish. Avoyelles will raise the largest corn crop since the war. The boll worm has made Its appear ance in lied River parish. A grand tournament took place at Ambrosia, East Baton Rouge parish, last week. The river is going down so rapidly in West Baton Rouge that they fear heavy cavings in the banks there. The wash in Tone's Bayou has put an end to the shipment of cattle from Shreveport. The river is too low. More than 20,000 logs of timber, most Sly pine, passed out of Little into Black river last week en route to the lumber markets. The cotton crop in Caddo is so large that even if the worms come there will be more cotton in the field than can be picked out. The Sparta Times has reliable infor mation that an election will be called at the proper time for a representative to fill the vacan y in the Legislature from that point. Troy merchants in Catahoula parish speak of building a large cotton gin to gin cotton at that point. Also an oil factory to manufacture oil out of cotton seed. It is reported that Alcide Mouton, the young negro lynched in St. Landry for the murder of his wife, so-called, was a disreputable character having been caught in various thefts and whipped in consequence. He had been run out of Avoyelles for an offense of this kind. The woman whom he killed on account of Infidelity was not his wife, but another man's, and was forty years old, while he was twenty. Planters on the bayous inform us that the caterpillars have webbed up. Such being the case we need apprehend no danger previous to the first of Septem ber, if that early. The cotton crop this year is very forward, and it we can reach September a very heavy crop will be made.-- Marksvillo Bulletin. We witnessed a lively squabble last Thursday on the steamer Hanna be tween a negro labor agent andt some negroes he hired in New Orleans to go to Ouachita. He paid their passage to Monroe, and at this place they conclud ed to jump him. Three of the five suc ceeded in getting ashore, but he held the other two by main, strength and awkwardness until the boat shoved off from shore. The struggle created Con siderable merriment.--[Baton Rouge Advocate. Last Sunday a negro girl, about 14 years of age, employed as nurse In Mr. Samuel Block's family, in Catahoula, poisoned Mrs. Block by putting croton oil in her tea. Soon after drinking the tea Mrs. Block began to feel the effect of the poison, and suspicion at once rested on this girl. She, on being ques tioned, acknowledged that she was the guilty party. She said that one Arch Jones told her to kill Mrs. Block, and she would then be allowed to go home. The girl is now in jail awaiting her ex amining trial. Now that the cotton worm is attract ing the attention of all planters, a few suggestions may not be amiss. From a large number of directions furnished us we have selected, by the advice of an old planter, the following: To one bar rel of water add one pound Paris green, ten pounds ground elm bark and one pound pulverized rosin, thoroughly mixing before placing in the water; this solution applied to the cotton plant just before or just after the young caterpillars make their appearance, and while there is no dew on the plant, is believed to be effectual beyond all doubt; such at least seems to have been the experience of one of our scientific farmers. Texas. Redskins are reported on the Guada lupe. Wheat and oats will be sown gener ally by farmers this fall. Mr. Jesse Forehand raised on his farm, near Florence, a cucumber that measured five feet five inches in length. Numerous "new bales" of cotton are being received at various Texas railroad towns this week. Picking is becoming general. Dave Hart, the leader of the Austin mob of colored strikers, was fined $5o by the mayor Wednesday. This squelches the strike in Austin. The State Horticultural and Pomo logical Association, at Houston, is mak ing every preparation for a grand dis play of Texas fruits at the exhibition on the 9th and 10th. The "Independent G(reenbackers" of Grayson county are to have a mass meeting at Sherman, September 1, to perfect their county organization. Sev eral clubs have been formed through out the county. State Treasurer Dorn advertises that State ten per cent bonds, issued under acts of May 3, 1873, and May 2. 1874, will be redeemed at the American Exchange National Bank, New York city. San Antonio E.rpress : It seems that the abortive attempts at riotous demon strations which have occurred in Texas have been made entirely by negroes and only by the most worthies class among them. the intelligent and respectable of the negroes refusing to join the move ment. A horrible tale of incest and murder comes from Paris. Lamar county. A man named Mayfield, a farmer near Paris, was caught by his stepson in the act of incest, and Mayfield killed the boy with a shotgun. The murderer escaped, while intense excitement pre vails in the neighborhood. In the county of San Marcos, Texas, the cotton worm appeared in destructive force early in July, and materially in jured the crop; also in Wilson county, i1i W ULI1 ANI , IJ.JiVUU.~A where, prior to July 22 they stripped the plant of its foliage. They also prevailed InCOolorado, Caldwell and Brazos coun ties, and more or less throughout the lower portion of the State, compelling the people to turn out en masse to save their crops from total annihilation. LaGrange R'vird : Our people are still battling with the worms with un precedented success, which Is very en couraging. The outlook Is decidedly better than it was a week ago. Home are using Johnson's Dead Hhot, others pure arsenio in water in the proportion of three-fourths to one pound to the acre, or a level teaspoonful to a bucket of water; the addition of a little starch rmadle of flour assists in holding the ar senic suspended in the water. (),hers are using Paris green in about the same Iproportions, suspended in water as the arsenic is, and applied with a sprinkling pump or a common watering pot. All are successful when the articles are pro -'1* mixed and applied. While it would have been difficult to fill orders of any magnitude for desirable descriptions unless at outside rates, or in some cases at a fraction more, average lists could not have been sold in small lots unless at about inside figures, and, under the limited demand, sales could hardly have been pressed except at further concessions. The dispatches reported Liverpool quiet at yes terday's improvement, with sales of 8000 bales and buyers offering 1-32d less for arrivals; Manchester dul, but not lower; Havre unchanged, with prices barely supported, and New York quiet at a reduction of pc in spots and 3-10 @10-I00o lower for futures.
