[Oontributed. A writer in a volume entitled "Improvements in the First National Century," gives the follow. tag description of the means emp oyed in navi gating the Mississippi and Ohio rivers: "heese were (flatboats) improved into keel boats, for the purpose of ascending the river and were propelled by long poles in the hands oif the boatmen. These standing on the gunwale (run. ning board) at the extreme bow of the boat, thrusting the pole in the mud and setting the shoulder against the top, pushed the buat for. ward by walklng towards the stern, which reohed they drew their poles, went forward and repeated the movement. By this laborious moue of travel all the menrchaudie sent from the Ilast via New Orlensa reached its destination, The voyage from New Orleans to St, Louil required four months." The mode above recited as arule was only em ployed in the Ohio in low stages of water, but in the Mississippi very seldom; the general mode was oordeling, bushwhacking and warping, tihe latter being the most used. This was done by coiling a three-quarter inch line in a skiff, pull. tng to a point above, making one end fast, and dropping down to the boat with the other; when all hands "tailed on' and walked aft on the cargo box; as each man reached the stern he let go, passed rapidly forward and took hold again. In the meantime the warp lavers were making an other lay. In running out of a pocket, and around a point, resource was had to anchors, every boat being provided with two to four of them; on nearing the anhoer the boat was hauled to shore, and the anchor brought aboard and if the shore admitted, the order was given to "pole," it not, to "cordell" until a point was reaobed where they could use the warp again. Sails were used whenever there was a favorable wind. Most of the "regulars" were provided with a mast and a spread of from 300 to 400 feet of can va, One in particular, the Cadmus, carried a mainesall, topsail, and top-gallant sail. The Uad mus made the run through the Canadian reach, si miles in 7 hours, and on the same voyage, f-om Bird's Point (now aliro) to the mouth of the Tennessee, 45 miles, in daylight. The masts were movable. The multiplyig steamboats, with their quickened voyages, found a sufficiency of business to keep these boats in use (towing them), and the building of them was continued on the Ohio for some time. In 1826 the steamboat Merchant was built at Pitteburg with her consort (a model barge.) The consort had a cabin on the main deck ex tending fore and aft, with a forecastle an4 quar ter deck. The Merchant carried the cargo and fuel, the boat's crew and deck passengers, who were not allowed on the cossort, it being re served exclusively for cabin passengers, In the same year the Hercules, the first upper cabin boat, was built. This innovation was much cp posed, and it was generally predicted that sue would capsize with the weight of this "top hamper," but on her trial trip she behaved so well that she was voted a success, and no more cabins on deck were built. *a* There is a probability that the Painter No. 8 will be engaged in the work of dredging Old River, and further, that Col. James, with his con vict force, will start Saturday for Tone's bayou, to commence the work of closing it. Things be gin to look a little more lovely at any rate, and bt. Louis can prepare to weep. The Charlie Wood and the N. M. Jones, to gether, towed a steamship yesterday to the ele vator. On the way back they had a run as far as the coal yard, on the opposite side. Oar inmform. ant states that the Wood was a little behind in the start, but passed the Jones and beat her to the yard. The Big Sunflower will be at the landing to day, receiving to leave Saturday positively for the Atohafalaya, Capt. Trouedale will be found in command, Mr. J. B. Schmit in the office. The New Orleans and Red River Transports. tion Company will send the W. J. Behan to Red river Saturday. A clerk is on the landing to-day receiving freight. The passenger and United States mail steamer Martha, W. 8. Bassett nisater, leaves to-day at 10 a. m. for the lower coast, through to Port Eads. Messrs. Legler and Barrois have charge of the ofclce. The Martha is a low pressure steamer, is very fast, and has elegant passenger accom modations. The Ilobt. Young, T. D. Terrebonne master, T. A. Darling cl rk, leaves to-morrow at 12 m. for the coast and Dc nsldsoeville, connectmg there with flats for the Lafourche. Ihe Young leaves here now every Friday and Tuesday at the above hour. On her Saturday trip the Martha makes an ex cursion through the jetties out into the Gulf. The splendid passenger and United States mail steamer Frank Pargond, J. M. White master, M. N.
