SOUTHERN NEWS. Louianals. The prospective cotton yield in De8o to has fallen off fully one-third, in con sequence of the worms. The caterpillars are at work In St. Landry. One-half a crop is spoken of in consequence. No poison is being used. The first bale of cotton was sold in Homer on the 2Ith inst, by W. I'. Forn by, the producer, to A. mcCranic, at 12b cents per pound. The cotton crop in Lafayette will be cut short one-half or two-thirds by the worms. But little poison was used, but this, in all cases, proved successful. The recent copious showers have had a very beneficial effect on the crops in St. Mary parish, and the planters are now hopeful, more than ever, of a fine crop, and a good yield. During the day of the 28th inst., a colored man was shot (down in cold blood by another colored man on the Oaklawa plantation, in St. Mary. A slight disagreement, a quarrel-then murder. A colored man was accidentally killed on the plantation of Messrs. Walker & Thompson, St. Mary, this week. He was cutting down a tree in the woods, and as the tree fell one of its largest limbs struck him and crushed him to death. A woman rMurdered her husband on Grand Woods plantation, in St. Mary, on the 29th inst. The coroner refused to hold an inquest over the murdered man, and investigate fully the circum stances and facts of the killing, as the law strictly requires, because some per son (a member of the police jury, it is said) told him that he would not be paid for his trouble. During the past ten days the cotton worm has put in an appearance in many parts of the parish and is already committing great ravages. From sev eral sections we learn that the crop is already damaged fully one-half. Bust is also dama lng the crop in several neighborhoods. The same is also the case in those portions of Winn and Caldwell that adjoin this parish. The bright prospects of a month ago are, we fear, doomed to be eclipsed. But planters have made a splendid corn crop which will help out very material ly.---[Uolumbia (Cadwell parish) Herald. The Lafayette Advertiser complains of vigilance committees in the parish. A short time since, one Baptiste Celes tin, a colored man, was arrested and brought before a justice of the peace in that parish by about thirty armed men, and an affidavit was made against him for larceny. Due proceedings were had and all the witnessed summoned, a majority of whom were members of the vigilance committee. After a full in vestigation before the parish judge, the accused was discharged without hesita tion. That lawless band of men, call ing themselves a vigilance committee, have since taken jurisdiction of the case, and convicted and sentenced the poor man to exile from the State for twenty years. The Advertiser calls upon the authorities to vindicate the law. As a general thing the cane crop of h this parish is somewhat backward, al though here and there the growth and - size of the cane are all that could be de- i sired. The rains along the coast and in " this vicinity have given the crop an im petus to its growth which is truly wonderful. On the Bayou Gross Tete, a we learn, however, that the cane crop is ' backward and is suffering for rain. In that section the worms have appeared in the cotton and are doing considerable damage. Ed. Desobry, Esq,, who has $ part of his place just adjoining town planted in cotton, informs us that there are plenty of cotton worms in his field. Notwithstanding the drawbacks above spoken of, we have no doubt a large crop of sugar will be made in this par ish. The corn crop is abundant, but the sweet potato crop will be a failure.- I [Iberville South. The planters of Concordia and ad joining parishes are becoming less fear ful of the cotton worm. The timely ap plication of Paris green puts this dia bolical little pest "where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are I at rest." The colored people in some parts sike afraid of it, but an energetic mapagr soon overcomes their hostility to it by proving its virtue himself. It is a wise suggestion that nose bags be made and put on the mules or other stock going through the cotton while applying the green, to prevent them from nippfng the poisoned plants. Though a mule has a cast iron stomach, he may sicken and die. Good reports are constantly coming in. Cotton pick ing is the order of the day. The weather is beautiful and the chronic croaker silent. There is considerable billious fever among the field hands, but noth ing dangerous.-[Natohez Democrat. Never in the history of West Feliqi ana, has the prospects for a cotton crop been more promising than it has been this year up to within a week or ten days since. At the present time a fair estimate, based upon reliable reports from all sections of the parish, indicates a large falling off from previous-esti mates, and we may be justified in the opinion that to-day the prospects are fully twenty to twenty-five per cent below what they were at the time of our last issue. This state of things has been accomplished through the protracted dry weather which has caused the plant to shed in an unprece dented manner. Old planters state to us that in all their experience they have never witnessed any similar thing to compare with it. And add to the un favorable aspect, the cry of "worms, worms!" reaches us from every conceiv able direction, nook and corner. There may be and probably is much exaggera tion in the reports that reach us, but if one half of what is represented is true the estimate for cotton will be cut down at least 50 per cent in the outcome. The corn crop, in the aggregate, is a good one.-[Feliciana Sentinel. Texan. A disease among the cattle near Georgetown causes them to go blind. A large and successful camp meeting is progressing at Fort Graham. The cotton crop of Falls county will be fifty per cent short. The Iteflector has been removed from Taylorville to Round Rock. Wailer county will make an average of one-thir: of a bale of cotton per acre this year. This is about 3 1-3 bales per hand. Thirty-one car loads of cattle were shipped from Taylorsville for the week ending August 25. The fall races of the Guadalupe Valley Jockey Club commence on November 7th and continue four days. The purses offered are very liberal. The long bridge of the Trans-Conti nental Railroad, a branca of the Texas and Pacific, over Bois d'Arc creek, near Bonham, in Fannin county, was par- t tially destroyed by fire a few days ago. The Jimplecute has no business think- 4 ing it ominous that the new peniten- ' ilary is to contain just 268 cells--pre- * isely the number of legislators which iI will be authorized under the next ap- n portionment of the State. The Grangers around Hempstead can not agree as to whether poison has any t effect on the cotton worms or not. Home " asseort affirmatively, while others are equally as positive to the contrary. The opinion is gaining ground generally, k from what we can gather frpm different ; sections of the State, that ithe voisons H used for killing cotton worms do not 1 meet the emergency. If the worms are , killed so is the cotton, and so the rem- , edy is worse than the evil, for it costs money to get it. ....--- 4* - - FINAN( IAL AND COMMERCIAL. 1 MONETARY.
