Democrat.] There were not more than six or seven steam boats on the western waters up to the year 1817. prom that year they rapidly increased. The writer of this reenembers that in s181f observing in company with a number of gentle men the long struggles of a etrn-wh'el boat to ascend the Horse Talil Icipule (t miles below Pittsburg). it was the unanihlous opilion that 1 such a contrivance might conquer the diffleul ties of the Mississippi, as high as Natchez, but that we of the Ohio must walt for some more happy century of inventions before boats could pass such rapids without the aid of oxen. In 1827 the bol and enterprising 'Capt. Shreve made the trip from New Orleans to Loulsville in twenty days ; previous to that keel boats were three months in making the same distance. 1 The rate of freight was so to SR per 100 pounds. In 1817 about 2o barges, averaging 100o tons each, comprised the whole tonnage for transporting the merchandise from New Orleans to the upper country; each performed one trip within the John Fitch was the inventor of the first ste amhoat. In 1788 Fitch made a practical test of his invention over l mile course of river, front of Water street, Philadelphia. His heat was 60 feet long. 8 feet. wide and 4 fect denp. He had on board the Governor of Pennsylvania and a number of officers of the Federal government. Yet, although his test was In every way a success, the government would ex e'nd to him no taid or enncoragnement. "HlIe con veyed his boat from thereto New York, hoping to get assistance there, but failing. he left his boat to rot on the shores of the Hludson river, and returned to his bore iin Kentucky. This was his last effort to obtain recognition, and he then gave up the hols' of ever reaping the re ward of his genius. leavimng it to future genera tions to place his name where it belongs, eat thet very head of the list of henefaetors of mankind. He left the fruit of his labors to be realdl by Robert Fulton. who, as is now acknowledged. obetained his ida of a ste'eiamloat from the one built by Fitch in I'Phildelphia, and which lay rotting on the banks of East river. LEWIS' PREPARATION of Fine Cast Steel to the Sulphuretted Dust. Those having used and tested the value of this compound, are respectfully informed that it can m had at the Drug Store of I. L. LYON and many other druggists of this city. To the uninitiated and skeptical I will say that. in placing it before the public. I have de viated from the whole conclave of inventors "of the surest and beet anti-bilious medicines." etc. I allude to their invariable secresy of ingre ditnts. The usual and only other mode in pro ducing Sulphuretted Iron is by the hydrogen process, where it is made by hundreds of pounds for the commerce of the world, and is not to be debended on, as it contains too great a proportion of carbon (charcoal) which cannot be avoided in the process of their manufac turing itf This Silphuret of Refined Steel is the pure sulphuret of steel, having not a particle of for eign matter in its combination. It is made by hand. Those eminent professors of chemistry and physicians of France, together with the United States Dispensatory, state that the great object in administering iron is to get the greatest anuantity into the gastric juice of the stomach, as ft is intendad to renovate and purify the blood. and its known value as a tonic. mys tf W.
